What to Expect

Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Winemakers Notes

This historic family-owned estate is named after its founder Cesare Pio, who established the business in 1881. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piemonte region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding hills provide a handful of ideal exposures for grape growing with unique micro-climates. The confluence of cold Alpine air with warm maritime moisture regularly creates a misty glow, or ‘nebbia’, over these foothills, hence Nebbiolo, the great red variety of the region. The grapes are sourced mostly from family-owned vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba read more...

The Nebbiolo grapes used to produce this Barolo come from Pio Cesare's family vineyardsaround the village of Serralunga d'Alba. Their own grapes account for about 70% oftheir production, and they also source grapes from the most favorable areas inCastiglione Falletto and Monforte, using the same sources they have been using for thelast hundred years. These are growers with whom Pio Cesare has been dealing forgenerations. Their Barolo has always been produced through careful blending of grapes fromdifferent vineyards. Wine Spectator ReviewHas fabulous blackberry and mineral, with hints of toasty oak. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. Very concentrated, yet racy and structured. Resembles the 2000. Gorgeous. Best after 2009.Wine Tasting NotesThe color is an intense glossy garnet, with orange reflections. The bouquet is ethereal, with hints of violets, blackberry jam, licorice and cloves. The palate is dry and austere with lengthy tannins. The wine ends with a long concentrated finish accompanied by a lingering hint of almonds.
