In 1988 one of the Cape's most foremost wine makers, Beyers Truter of Kanonkop Estate formed a partnership with four ardent wine lovers in Johannesburg with one ideal in mind : To produce a wine of exceptional character. After exploring the Cape Winelands for a suitable location they found a perfectly situated farm in the Koelenhof area within the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin region. Coincidence provided an appropriate name. The farm's original name was Nooitgedacht, which for five generations belonged to the Beyers family before Jan Andries Beyers sold it in 1895. Beyers Truter is a direct descendent of Jan Beyers, thus making him the sixth generation to farm this land. This piece of land could only have one name - BEYERSKLOOF Today the business is in capable hands of Beyers Tuter and Simon Halliday from Raisin Social, UK Read less

Wine: Beyerskloof Pinotage Reserve Region / Country: Western Cape South Africa Vintage: 2006 Grape: 100% Pinotage ABV: 14.5% Price: $198 Tasting Date: 12 February 2011 Appearance: Clear, opaque ruby, paler rims, legs Nose: Clean, medium(+) intensity with developing aroma of black cherry, plum, smoke, chocolate, sweet spice, baked cherry Palate: Dry with medium(+) acidity, medium tannin showing ripeness but a bit coarse. Medium(+) alcohol level and medium(+) body. Medium intensity flavor of smoke, black cherry, cloves, rubber, black pepper, plum and coffee. Medium(+) length, with robust tannin and lively acidity, showing balance, with a warming alcohol, a soft fruit, grippy grain and fleshy tannin, with baked ripeness but still expressive freshness. Conclusion: Good quality level because it is quite well balanced with complexity in flavor and aroma. The length is relatively long and approachable. Ready to drink but can develop further, which will benefit from a further ageing of 1-2 years.
