Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Windsor Gardens Vineyard 2000
This vineyard has been the backbone of our Russian River Valley Pinot Noir for a decade now,yet this is our first vineyard designated bottling of the wine. The 2000 vintage gave us lovely mature fruit flavors and ripe mouthfeel that begged to be kept apart.Aromas of concentrated cherry jam leap from the glass followed by lingering spice and toast notes. The flavors mirror these aromas, with red cherry fruit lasting well into the finish, and the wine displays a remarkable suppleness in the mouth.Ten months in French oak provided integration and structural support, creating a wine that should evolve gracefully for another five years.
(Review of July 2002.) In some ways, a Pinot Noir like this one is hard to rate. For lovers of potent Zins such as ourselves, it's a Pinot made in heaven. Lovers of elegant, restrained Pinot Noirs (actually, we like those too...) will probably find this over the top. This well-balanced Pinot Noir is powerful, like a dry late harvest wine, but is in no sense clumsy and, to our taste, exhibits no unpleasant hotness despite the alcohol level. Wonderful ripeness and length largely submerge the alcohol. In our recent tasting, the nose was a bit muted when the bottle was first opened, but it blossomed into a multi-dimensional mix of ripe, buttery black cherry and strawberry fruit as well as ever-changing nuances of dark fruits, spice, herbs, and white chocolate. This wine fills all the palate seams from start to long finish. It was enthusiastically rated by all the tasters (Zin lovers all), and if this young wine cracks open a bit more the current score may even be stingy.
