Pinot Gris Clos St Urbain Rangen de Thann Selection des Grains Nobles Zind-Humbrecht 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

95 points , Wine Spectator: "A focused SGN, with tangy acidity that really brightens flavors of quince paste, crystallized honey, lemon meringue pie, with a pretty floral note. Very juicy and finely balanced, with a hint of salty minerality that builds toward the long finish. Drink now through 2034. 100 cases made."10/11 96 points, Ian d'Agata, Vinous: " (160 g/l r.s.; 10.8 g/l total acidity): Full, deep yellow. Incredibly pure, high-toned nose offers penetrating floral lift and tangy botrytis tones to the mirabelle, strawberry and peach aromas. Superripe and seamless, with an explosive quality to the yellow fruit, strawberry liqueur and custard flavors allied with a degree of finesse that’s rare for pinot gris at this extreme level of ripeness. The endless finish features a wonderfully perfumed smoky botrytis quality. The total acidity here is so high that this wine actually doesn’t seem as sweet as the actual residual sugar number might lead you to believe. Olivier Humbrecht told me that upwards of 90% of the grapes used to make this wine were affected by noble rot." 12/12.

The annual cycle of work, parallel with cycle of nature, consists of a number of interventions, comprising biological treatments against the diseases and others aiming at improving the quality. mong the latter, the pruning is particularly decisive. Too severe, it prevents the harmonious development of the vine, insufficient, the vine will overproduce unripen grapes. A this moment, the presence of Paul’s grandson Pierre-Paul Humbrecht, is of utmost importance to the vineyard, to prune correctly and at the right time. Given unfavourable climatic conditions, the harvest may suffer but when the seasons flow normally the right pruning will be rewarded by a juice of very high quality. hen the vine has had its budburst, the disbudding (selection of branches) and desuckering (supression of the growths resulting from sucker from the trunk), are made manually to avoid any harmful effect to the vine. During the bloom, trimming consists in shortening the end of the branches leaving just the right quantity of good quality leafs that the young vine needs. During ripening, the stripping to improve the exposure of the grapes to the sun and thinning out the grapes in excess must be done with precision in order to obtain a harvest of great quality. orking the ground consists of several heavy duty work. Hilling up the vine, ploughing down and plowing between the rows of vine are accomplished each year. Naturally, Pierre-Paul Humbrecht is using the latest agricultural technologies to ease the task while remaining in harmony with nature, thus our advance towards biological agriculture or rather the search of our origins towards the Earth... Pushes the envelope with its high-toned dried tropical fruit. Coconut pineapple apricot and caramel all hold court. Thickly textured and lively the flavors segue into an intriguing caramel and white chocolate finish. Drink now through 2008. BS Wine Spectator.

The 1998 Tokay-Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St.-Urbain Selection de Grains Nobles has 13.5% alcohol and 160 grams of residual sugar. Even though no new oak was employed its aromatics reveal vanilla powerful smoke and spice scents. This is a raspberry apricot peach spice and toast-flavored wine with magnificent breadth and an unbelievably long finish. Even though its flavor profile is unctuous almost jellied in character it possesses brilliant focus. This is an extraordinary wine with
