Pillar Box Red Australia Henry's Drive Vign 2007
The 2007 Pillar Box Red, a blend of 65% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot. Purple-colored, it exhibits an expressive nose of spice box, earth notes, blueberry, and black currant. Ripe, sweet, and layered, this nicely rendered red has exceptional balance and length for its humble price...90" WA 02/09.
Even lower-priced than the excellent 2006, the 2007 Pillar Box Red is another no-brainer bargain. Similar to the 2006 in power and structure, it's a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet, and Merlot with a rich and layered feel. More dominated by the Shiraz in 2007 than in 2006, there are big doses of blueberry and currant fruit, with subtle undertones of herbs, meat, and black pepper. Rich, long, still a bit sharp on the attack, but overall a remarkable deal in red wine. As the label says, it benefits from being decanted.
My Rating 87. This wine is fruity fullbodied blend of Syrah, Cab and Merlot from Australia. Nose is fruity with not much complexity. Taste is fruity with fine tannins. Is a good wine for the money
My Rating 91: Nose restrained and extremly well balanced elegant. Body is silky with also very good balance. Fruit is likeable and not overdone like in many Australiens. A bargain!
Fruit on the nose, with an oaky taste and a slightly sour, spicy finish. Velvety texture.
How can something so cheap (6.99!) be so good? Incredibly well balanced.
drinkable but would not buy again

Ruby red. Aromas of smoky grilled meat, dark cherry, plum and licorice candy are lifted by alcohol and show a distinctly herbal cabernet tone. Fat and broad in the mouth, with sweet, candied berry, plum and cherry flavors complicated by hints of cracked pepper and violet pastille. Finishes on a tangier, red fruit note of cranberry, with no noticeable tannins.
A fabulous value, this 20,000 case blend, assembled by renowned Barossa winemaker Chris Ringland, is composed of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Shiraz, and 11% Merlot, primarily from young vines. Ringland has rarely worked with such huge quantities, but he kept the wine in tank with a little exposure to American and French oak, bottled it unfined and unfiltered, and finished it with a screw cap. It boasts luscious black currant fruit intermixed with smoke, herbs, and cedar. Richly fruity, opulent, and medium to full-bodied, it is one of the great wine bargains of the world. Consume it over the next 2-3 years.
There are 70,000 cases of the 2005 Red, a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot from young vines. However, this is no wimpy wine at 15% alcohol. An unbelievable value, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as an uplifted, projected nose of sweet red and black fruits, earth, and spice box. Supple-textured with a voluptuous mouthfeel and unbelievable richness, this wine clearly over-delivers. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years.
Kim and Mark Longbottom of Henry's Drive Vignerons, Padthway, Australia, produce wonderful wines. Pillar Box Red is a symphony of color, aromas and flavors. Opening with brilliant, dark ruby/purple color; continuing with flavors and aromas of plum, cassis, clove, cocoa, fresh, juicy red raspberries and blueberries and concluding with a lush, zesty, tangy finish for an elegant and delightful performance. Enjoy with grilled salmon or yellow fin tuna, roasted, butterflied leg of lamb or juicy, barbecued steak. Twist the cap and let the music begin.
Supple, generous and elegant in style, with a distinctive foxy edge to the currant and boysenberry flavors as the finish lingers enticingly. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now.
