Even lower-priced than the excellent 2006, the 2007 Pillar Box Red is another no-brainer bargain. Similar to the 2006 in power and structure, it's a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet, and Merlot with a rich and layered feel. More dominated by the Shiraz in 2007 than in 2006, there are big doses of blueberry and currant fruit, with subtle undertones of herbs, meat, and black pepper. Rich, long, still a bit sharp on the attack, but overall a remarkable deal in red wine. As the label says, it benefits from being decanted.

My Rating 91: Nose restrained and extremly well balanced elegant. Body is silky with also very good balance. Fruit is likeable and not overdone like in many Australiens. A bargain!

Fruit on the nose, with an oaky taste and a slightly sour, spicy finish. Velvety texture.

How can something so cheap (6.99!) be so good? Incredibly well balanced.

The 2007 Pillar Box Red, a blend of 65% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot. Purple-colored, it exhibits an expressive nose of spice box, earth notes, blueberry, and black currant. Ripe, sweet, and layered, this nicely rendered red has exceptional balance and length for its humble price.

A perennial Best Buy in these pages, the 2008 Pillar Box Red does not disappoint. A blend of 66% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Merlot, it is purple-colored with an enticing nose of cherry blossom, cinnamon, blueberry, and licorice. Ripe and rich for its humble price, it has plenty of savory fruit, good balance, and a seamless, fruit-filled finish.

Open textured, this is a bit gritty with tannins, but it's generous with its meat and blackberry flavors, finishing on a savory note. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2011.

Deep-ruby color fills the glass, while red berries, brown sugar and hints of sage fill the air. This medium-bodied wine rolls over your tongue and as it does, the elements of tobacco and pepper lead into a fine spun chocolate-raspberry finish. Would match best with grilled steaks and roasted red peppers.

The 2006 Pillar Box Red is 50% Shiraz, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Merlot aged in a mix of used French and American oak. Purple-colored, it offers an enticing, fruity nose including aromas of cassis, black cherry, black raspberry, and blueberry. Full-bodied, ripe, and layered with flavor, this wine totally over-delivers on my hedonist's meter. Drink this awesome value over the next 2-3 years. Pillar Box has a powerful pedigree; fruit sourced from Henry's Drive and winemaking consultation from the renowned Chris Ringland.

Supple, generous and elegant in style, with a distinctive foxy edge to the currant and boysenberry flavors as the finish lingers enticingly. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now.
