Pillar Box Padthaway Red 2015

Member Review by Wolle:

My Rating 87: Full body but somehow leaning to a big valley jug wine. Pleasant to drink. nose is fruity and lively. I liked the previous vintage better but this is still a good deal !

Unimpressed. Flat. Very earthy with mineral tones, but lacking balance. Drinkable, but would not buy again.

Vintage: 2009 11/14/2013

A blend of 68% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot, the 2009 Pillar Box Red has a deep garnet-purple color and pronounced aromas of warm blackberries, spiced plums and mulberries with a whiff of cassis. Full-bodied with medium-high acid and a low to medium level of soft tannins, a good amount of rich fruit, and a long spicy finish, this is one to drink now through 2013.

A blend of 68% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot, the 2009 Pillar Box Red is deep garnet in color with a remaining touch of purple. It presents aromas of dried mulberries and warm plums with an undercurrent of anise and powdered cinnamon. Full-bodied and concentrated in flavor, it’s a little more tannic than the previous vintages with refreshing acidity and a long mocha laced finish. Drink it now to 2014+.

Supple, silky and appealing for its red berry and spice flavors that lift off nicely over the refined finish. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2013.

Deep garnet in color with a touch of purple, the 2009 Pillar Box Red has a bit more Shiraz in the blend (68%) and presents aromas of dried mulberries and plums, anise and powdered cinnamon. Full-bodied, rich and more tannic than the others, it reveals mocha flavors aside a crisp acid line and a long, spicy finish. Drink it now to 2018+.

There are 70,000 cases of the 2005 Red, a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot from young vines. However, this is no wimpy wine at 15% alcohol. An unbelievable value, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as an uplifted, projected nose of sweet red and black fruits, earth, and spice box. Supple-textured with a voluptuous mouthfeel and unbelievable richness, this wine clearly over-delivers. Enjoy it over the next 2ndash;3 years.

Deep garnet color with a slight brick hue, the 2008 Pillar Box Red reveals a dried plums, dates and raisiny nose with subtle notes of espresso and tobacco. This 66% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot blend is full, rich and balanced with generous fruit flavor, low to medium tannins that are a little more astringent than the 2005 and also finishes long and spicy. Drink it now to 2016.

In a time of rising prices, itrsquo;s nice to see that amazing quality can still be found in a $10 bottle of wine. This latest blend from Henryrsquo;s Drive Vignerons surely exceeds any expectations. The 2004 Pillar Box can easily outshine a wine three times the price. This wine shows the soft, elegant, lush style from Australiarsquo;s Padthaway region, but donrsquo;t let that fool you mdash; this wine is intense and loaded with serious fruit, and has a long, lingering finish. Jammy black fruit and baked spice dominate the flavors contained within this well-rounded wine. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Shiraz, and 11% Merlot, this wine is a great sipper and will go wonderfully with pizza, grilled meats or stews.
