Pietra Santa Supertuscan Blend Cienega Valley Sassolino 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Sassolino was made exclusively from grapes grown on the Pietra Santa estate. Sassolino means “little stone” in Italian, a reference to our gravel-rich soils. This Super Tuscan blend is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Colorino, and Sangiovese. The wine has robust fruit and tastes of black cherry with hints of chocolate and oak, finished with soft round tannins.

The Winery Pietra Santa and its History Pietra Santa is a family-run estate producing artisanal wines and olive oils in California’s Central Coast. The site was planted to winegrapes in the 1850s by Frenchman Theophile Vache who chose the location because of the maritime climate and unique soils. Pietra Santa is 25 miles from Monterey Bay and benefits from cool coastal breezes that allow for a long growing season. The estate’s location on the San Andreas Fault creates soils rich with granite and limestone that naturally lower yields and add distinctive flavors to the wines. The winery was named PIETRA SANTA, Italian for SACRED STONE, in honor of these exceptional soils. In 2005, the property was purchased by the Blackburns, a family dedicated to preserving and building upon this magnificent winemaking history. Read less

Super Tuscan made from Cabernet, Colorino, and Sangiovese. Medium bodied with bold berry flavors that stay with you. Noted some hints of earth and herb as well. This wine is dry with a nice background of tannins that gives it a certain pleasant bite to it. I fell like this wine may be a little young but cannot tell for sure. Perhaps decanting it would open up the fruit more. Lots of potential here and you can't go wrong when it is only $14.

Dark fruits in this Super Tuscan style wine were on the forefront for me with touches of berry and cassis. Earth and leather on the nose. Chocolate flavors and some oak integrate nicely with firm tannins that give the wine great structure. I was impressed by this wine when I tasted it and for around $14 in my locale I think that this wine presents a good value.
