Pietra Santa Sangiovese Cienega Valley 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells intense. At first it is low and dusty, and very stony on the nose, then come light notes of jammy red fruit accented by Maduro tobacco, briarwood and sage with a background note of cumin. Very broad in the mouth with a nice transparent feel, though air does add weight here. The fruit is bright cherry fruit, a little bitter around the edges and offset by soft, leafy greens and rusty iron notes. This regains pretty impressive focus on the finish where the fruit offers a lingering interplay of sweet and bitter cherries. There’s excellent underlying structure as well, with tannin that cuts decisively and a lingering granitic, stony finale. 92pts

The Winery Pietra Santa and its History Pietra Santa is a family-run estate producing artisanal wines and olive oils in California’s Central Coast. The site was planted to winegrapes in the 1850s by Frenchman Theophile Vache who chose the location because of the maritime climate and unique soils. Pietra Santa is 25 miles from Monterey Bay and benefits from cool coastal breezes that allow for a long growing season. The estate’s location on the San Andreas Fault creates soils rich with granite and limestone that naturally lower yields and add distinctive flavors to the wines. The winery was named PIETRA SANTA, Italian for SACRED STONE, in honor of these exceptional soils. In 2005, the property was purchased by the Blackburns, a family dedicated to preserving and building upon this magnificent winemaking history. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Opens with a raw woody note then layers of herbal, mineral, earth, limestone, a touch roasted/fudgy gingerbread, chocolate chip cookie dough, blond tobacco, and medicinal ricola cough drop. Intense and complex! Big and broad in the mouth, deep tobacco right up front followed by intense cherry fruit There are very soft tannins and good acidity giving this a rich feel without excess fat but there is a bit of a shapeless feel to the wine, though it is seamless. Intense powerful and complex with a subtle and fruit driven finish, good purity and power, elegant even at this high alcohol – can stand a year or two in the cellar, cleansing finish 89pts

Rather intensely herbal and sweet at the same time with a powdery, dusty granite/vitamin tone over a warm cherry coulis base. Turns a bit smoky and oily with air but that big herbal element remains the core here. Big sweet fruit on entry parried by great mineral notes and great mouth grabbing tannins that offer a lovely austerity. There is a fine green herbal streak running through this that keeps this from becoming too much. A touch of coffee cream and bitter chocolate gains traction on the back half along with a touch of citron, the red cherry fruit is a touch hidden at the moment. Nice clean and fresh finish with a touch of mouth puckering tannins. Mouthwatering with good structural length. 90pts

Dark fruit and earthy mushroom on the nose with deep, heavy raspberry notes. Funky palate, dry and fairly smooth.

Funky dirty, rustic nose. The taste is dark and sharp, full of spice and oak and leather. The tannins are quite well structured, and in balance with the dark fruit flavors, there's a bit of rubber and tar and a good bit of acidity. The aromas might be more interesting than the palate, but it's a solid, interesting wine.

You mythological down-home country tavern, how i do enjoy the slightly muddy tap-water layered onto rye, out of a glass that I snitched off a drunkie mcnamara who had his last shot of bourbon and fell down the stairs. Wild Ed been talkin dirt about me again, time to end it for good, but the finish is long, and I take no pleasure in revenge, none at all. The day is hot, too hot for pura sangre, good thing I ain't.

Big, spicy, leathery, smokey, all that stuff. Picking up on some of the rubbery notes mentioned elsewhere. A fun wine and a great value.
