What to Expect

Sangiovese's claim to fame is its role as the heart of Chianti, Brunello and many Super Tuscan wines though it is gaining ground as a varietal wine around the globe. When grown in a suitable location the grape's soft tannins, succulent acidity and moderately intense cherry and herb flavors make Sangiovese very easy to drink as well as supremely versatile at the dinner table.

Winemakers Notes

Our 2005 Estate Sangiovese tastes of cranberry and Morello cherry with undertones of anise and a supple finish. The depth and complexity of this wine has made it an annual best seller and the ultimate companion to great Italian cuisine. Typical of this varietal, as our Sangiovese vines have matured and we have been rewarded by increasingly rich fruit.

Editorial Reviews

Opens with a raw woody note then layers of herbal, mineral, earth, limestone, a touch roasted/fudgy gingerbread, chocolate chip cookie dough, blond tobacco, and medicinal ricola cough drop. Intense and complex! Big and broad in the mouth, deep tobacco right up front followed by intense cherry fruit There are very soft tannins and good acidity giving this a rich feel without excess fat but there is a bit of a shapeless feel to the wine, though it is seamless. Intense powerful and complex with a subtle and fruit driven finish, good purity and power, elegant even at this high alcohol - can stand a year read more...

Rather intensely herbal and sweet at the same time with a powdery, dusty granite/vitamin tone over a warm cherry coulis base. Turns a bit smoky and oily with air but that big herbal element remains the core here. Big sweet fruit on entry parried by great mineral notes and great mouth grabbing tannins that offer a lovely austerity. There is a fine green herbal streak running through this that keeps this from becoming too much. A touch of coffee cream and bitter chocolate gains traction on the back half along with a touch of citron, the red cherry fruit is a touch hidden at the moment. Nice clean and fresh read more...

Funky dirty, rustic nose. The taste is dark and sharp, full of spice and oak and leather. The tannins are quite well structured, and in balance with the dark fruit flavors, there's a bit of rubber and tar and a good bit of acidity. The aromas might be more interesting than the palate, but it's a solid, interesting wine.

Big, spicy, leathery, smokey, all that stuff. Picking up on some of the rubbery notes mentioned elsewhere. A fun wine and a great value.

You mythological down-home country tavern, how i do enjoy the slightly muddy tap-water layered onto rye, out of a glass that I snitched off a drunkie mcnamara who had his last shot of bourbon and fell down the stairs. Wild Ed been talkin dirt about me again, time to end it for good, but the finish is long, and I take no pleasure in revenge, none at all. The day is hot, too hot for pura sangre, good thing I ain't.
