What to Expect

The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.

Winemakers Notes

Red Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul (in memory of the grandfather Francis Usseglio). This wine is made from three different terroirs (Serres, Bédine and La Crau) with 100% Grenache. The vines are quite old and the yield is 20-22 hl./ha.
The production comes from about 6,5 ha and in an average year are produced 140 hl or 18.000 bottles.

Slightyl reductive nose but the granite/galet notes shined through with kirsch cherry and lots of CDP funk. Palate was big but very elegant with tremendous fruit concentration. Touch hot but the more I drink CDP the more I realize that slight heat is in the profile of most of the wines. Great finish along with a tremendous backbone. Remains one of the most original wines in the appelation.

Off the bad this did not smell or taste like Chateauneuf. More like a young Clos St. Denis or Clos de la Roche. Really no identifiable CDP characteristics. Just a super-concentrated, dark, perfectly balanced wine with outsatnding length . . . I knew this could not be . .. After an hour breathing this wine just screamed CDP. Nose of inky black cherry, stunning mineral tones, game, other dark brooding black fruits and exotic spices. The palate on this wine is amazing. The fruit is intense and there is alot of it. Yet this wine is so light on its feet. The mid-palate then comes at you on all cylinders on the read more...

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 112, January/February 2004 ($69) Red-ruby. Raspberry liqueur, game and exotic woodsmoke on the nose. Large-scaled, powerful and dense, with an impressive, solid core of almost medicinal black cherry and dark berry fruit. Very deep, rich, young Chateauneuf with strong but ripe palate-coating tannins and superb persistence. This will reward seven to ten years of cellaring.

Super dense and massive. A touch hot at the end.
