Owned by the Sancerre since the St Louis reign Menetou-Salon estate was sold to the Superintendent of Finances of King Charles VII, Jacques in 1448. Shortly after, Jacques Coeur fell into disgrace and his assets were confiscated. After being owned by several famillies, in the 18th century, the Brancas Lauragais Family inherited Menetou-Salon castle and in 1773 their daughter Pauline married Louis Engelbert, Prince and Duke d'Arenberg. Since then, the castle has been the residance of the French branch of the d'Arenberg Princes. In the 19th century, Prince Auguste d'Arenberg, main figure of the Chateau, decided to enlarge it and to make it more attractive. He made it the symbol of his establishment in the Cher Region. To do so, he called on Paul Ernest Sanson (1836-1918), architect, who realized a daring piece of work, inspired by the Jacques Coeur Palace in Bourges, one of the elegant examples of civil architecture from the end of the 15th century. These renovations took place between 1884 and 1891. Six years of relentless work for a total of 1,7 millions gold francs. The result is breathtaking and compells one the Chateau de Menetou-Salon as a jewel of neo-gothic architecture. Read less
