Pierre Henri Morel Cotes-du-Rhone Villages Signargues 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Reticent on the nose with clear notes of candied strawberry and blackberry fruits wrapped in hints of leather, dried herbs, grilled meat and licorice. Smooth and moderately rich in the mouth, this really could use a bit more acidity for my palate, though many will appreciate the wine’s seamless character and slightly weight feel. On the palate one fined herb streaked slightly jammy strawberry fruit with the impressive complexity found on the nose. A bit meaty, leathery and briary, this is quite nuanced on the palate with a moderately big rush of wild plum and slightly gamy fruit on the backend. There’s a little candied quality here on the finish, but the flavors remain fairly savory so it’s quite attractive and not intrusive on the moderately long, clean fresh finish. 89pts

Served with Thanksgiving dinner 2013. Very purple color, violet and plum aroma - I swear this tastes purple. Sweet, medium body, medium tannin. Bought at Total Wine, Nov. '13.

This wine - sourced from a reputable Chateauneuf du Pape house (Morel) - has the usual approachable jammy nose and entry but has a somewhat off-putting bitterness. This acerbic detraction may abate with 2-3 years of further bottle aging, however. Decent value.

Bright ruby. Spicy cherry and black raspberry on the fragrant nose. White pepper, anise and lavender emerge with aeration and carry onto the palate, which displays sweet red fruit flavors. Fine-grained tannins add grip but are quickly absorbed by the fruit, which becomes more lush on the long, spicy finish. Drinking very well right now.

A very stylish red, this displays dark plum and black cherry fruit melded perfectly with black tea and melted licorice notes. Stays silky and refined through the iron-tinged finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2014.

The 2010 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Signargues, primarily Grenache blended with Syrah and Mourvedre, exhibits strawberry and black cherry fruit notes intermixed with hints of licorice, damp earth and garrigue. This medium-bodied, elegant, pure, deep ruby/purple-tinged effort should drink well for 5–6 years.

A real sleeper of the vintage is Morel's 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Signargues. This dense plum/ruby wine exhibits loads of raspberry and black cherry fruit, medium body, and plenty of spice and earth. It should drink nicely for 3-4 years. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France. 2009 Morel, Pierre Henri Signargues Cotes du Rhone Villages 750ml
