What a beautiful expression of the Cote-Rotie! The quintessential scent of Syrah with Cola, blackberry and bramble is there in abundance. This wine would last another 5 years at least, but works well today with (still) youthful vigor that reminds me of trips to Haida Gwaii and the southern Alaska. What beauty! Only Washington State and British Columbia Syrah can approach this perfection. On the palate, there is cedar-infused blueberry and other delights. 93 points.

I bought a 1/2 case of this wine for the long haul, but I could not resist checking it out to see how it is. I decanted for 2-3 hours before consumption. This wine is jam packed with great fruit and the structure to develop over the next 10 years. Yet this wine is refined and able to be enjoyed today.

This is the North Berkeley "Cuvee Unique" which is 100% Syrah. The nose is a bit more perfumed than that of the "Viallieres"; not quite as animale. This wine still has an inky, aromatic char and a bit more ripe plum and blackberry mixes with the sweet tar, black tea and spice. Dried chewy plum with the tannins gathering mid-palate. The acid proffers a bit more polish to the palate. Very harmonious and refined, with flexible power and muscularity tempered by its acid and structural tightrope balancing act. Exotic and indulgent.

Texturally expansive with full body and ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit intermixed with notions of new oak and licorice, the 2004 Cote Rotie Rose Pourpre (from Cote Rozier) is a deep, rich, impressive effort. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Syrah wine from Rhone in France. 2004 Pierre Gaillard Cote Rotie Rose Pourpre 750ml
