Less massive than Chambertin, the Grand Cru Vineyard, which happens to be just on the other side of Clos de Beze, shows immediate fruit expressions and a solid tannic structure. 80% new oak barrels are used on this wine which can age for another 5 to 7 years. Compares with Grand Crus negociant prices at $100 per bottle.

Sweet, finely structured and quite elegant with big, rich, rather ripe flavors and good if not exceptional intensity. This is delicious and seductive rather than profound and is more at the level of a very good premier cru than a fine grand cru.

The young, engaging Pierre Damoy believes the 99 vintage is his best yet, even out classing his extraordinary 93s. While he remains extremely pleased with his 93s (and rightly so), he believes that the 99s better represent the style that he wants to produce, with softer tannins and better overall balance. To achieve these changes, he has recently upgraded his equipment, including a new stemmer, a higher performing triage (sorting) table, the elimination of all pumps, temperature control and a rolling treadmill to move the grapes without damaging the skins. The 99s will be bottled in January read more...

Pierre Damoy believes the '00 vintage is a good but not exceptional vintage though he was quick to point out that he continues to make progress with his wines. He attributes this to the changes he has incorporated in the vineyards since he took over in 1992. By contrast, he is very excited by the prospects of the '01 vintage and cautiously opines that they may be his best wines yet; while it is still very early, I share Damoy's initial enthusiasm for the quality - the Clos de Bèze appears to be a knockout and for the first time ever, he may release a Clos de Bèze Vieilles Vignes from 80+ read more...
