Pico Maccario Barbera d'Asti "Lavignone" 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

"Barbera d'Asti Lavignone is a bright and aromatic wine with aromas and flavors of red cherries, violets and wild herbs. Soft tannins and a moderate level of alcohol and medium weight make Lavignone an ideal wine for immediate enjoyment. It can be served at room-temperature or slightly chilled and with a wide range of foods."- Winebow.com

Red-more-than-purple color with a fair amount of light coming through. Fair amount of berry-cherry nose with some volatiles. Medium bodied on the palate, very tart (this one is going to need food). Unusual tongue feel--it seems to be coating my tongue. There is some pleasant cherry fruit flavor. No tannin or back of the palate bitterness. I'll probably like this one better as the evening goes on. US$11.99 at Winec Club in Santa Ana.

The nose on this wine was actually rather powerful, lovely dark cherries and licorice dominates. It has a light to medium body, with fresh but subtle acidity, and very subtle tannins as well. The taste is very good, red fruit and minted licorice, hints of vanillaed oak. Finish is quite short and follows up on the palate tastewise. This is a light, but not thin drinking wine, a real patio pounder.

Medium red, on the way to brown in my case (bad light maybe?) Smell; Candyish, red licorice and some spice. Also some red fruit, but I could not detect it until after a few minutes in the glas. Some spice flavours. Taste; Good solid body, a littlebit sweet almost in the beginnig, then of to some good red fruit. Also a Fisherman Friendish taste, and the whole thing went of to a good and solid finish. Conclusion; Good wine, absoluttly worth the price here in Norway. All in all, a solid Barbera wine!

This shows fine depth and balance, revealing black cherry and blackberry notes on a supple texture. Hints of citrus and bitter almond appear on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2014.

The 2011 Barbera d’Asti Lavignone is slightly darker and more focused than the Berro. Black cherries, plums, flowers and spices all make an appearance in this delicious, approachable Barbera. A gentle hint of wet stones adds minerality and salinity on the delineated, nuanced finish. The Lavignone is another solid wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2016.
