Pichon Lalande Pauillac 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

*2016 Bordeaux Future*"The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc (compare that to the 2010 that had 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, for example--that should give you some pointers). The alcohol level is 13.32% and a pH of 3.76. I tasted from a new oak barrel and the final blend will include around 60% new wood and 40% one year old, which is something I took into account. It has a very succinct bouquet, one that is almost understated at first, gradually unfolding with blackberry, cedar and graphite scents, in the vein of say the 1986 or 1996 Pichon Lalande of the past. The palate is very well balanced and what I appreciate here is that it is still as much identifiable as Pichon Lalande as it is a Pauillac and a 2016. There is that touch of roundness imparted by the Merlot, even though the Cabernet dominates the blend, surely the terroir sculpting the wine. It gently builds in intensity, maintaining freshness, a gentle but insistent grip towards the finish and a very long aftertaste. This is probably just a notch up on the outstanding 2015 Pichon-Lalande, a Rolls Royce with a purring engine." -Neal Martin, Wine Advocate *(96-98 Points)**Expected Arrival: Autumn 2019*

Pencil lead, dried herbs, a hint of grass come together on the elegant and refined nose. In the mouth this is a bit tight but has a graceful feel to it. The ripe tannins are lacy but firm, and it remains transparent in the mouth, it's not built on power, but on purity, making it a bit underwhelming today perhaps but this has terrific potential over the midterm if this is your style. 91pts

beautiful nose of dark fruits, spice, chocolates and espresso. the wine is full bodied but possesses some elegance, just slightly short on the finish compared to some of its 2006 peers. This wine shows well with about 2 hours of air.

drank august 2007 / past its prime - had it 4 years ago, still enjoyable / coriander, celery on the nose / ashtray, fermented taste with virtually no aftertaste / overcooked plums & a touch of Campbell's tomato soup

Good full medium red. Aromas of plum, smoked meat, iron and rose. Supple and broad, with a restrained sweetness to the flavors of plum, smoke and meat. Seems to gain in sweetness toward the back, finishing with good breadth and length. 88 points Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2006 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild 750ml
