Phipps Family Cellars Status Quo 2007

Member Review by VegasOenophile:

Strong baking spice on the nose. Red fruits. On the palate, it's rich and zesty and loaded with baking spice. Nice red fruit flavors. It's nice wine, but leans a bit too far on the zinfandel qualities, so seems much less a blend than a zinfandel. 2/18/12

This was my second go-around with this wine. My first bottle was tasted in February 2012. Either this bottle needed a few extra months of lay-down time, or this bottle was just much better than the first. The same notes of rich dark red and purple fruit, cola, and toasted oak abounded, but everything came together in a much better executed package. There was nothing "flat" about this bottle, unlike my first. It's clear that this is a Zinfandel based blend, as it has a very rich and full bodied backbone, embraced and emboldened by Cab, and gracefully finished off by Syrah and Petite Sirah. Though rich and very approachable, this wine lacks balance in the acid and tannin departments. I'd say it's in its last year or two of life. It probably will not lay down much longer. Drink now! 89pts. Tasted 07/18/2012
