The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is the finest Cabernet Togni has produced since the mid-nineties. In bottle, it is even better than it was from barrel. Even better, there are 2,100 cases, a humongous quantity by this property s measly production standards. The color is an inky/black, and the nose offers up spectacular aromas of melted licorice intermixed with creme de cassis, acacia flowers, roasted meats, tapenade, and subtle pain grille. Opulent and voluptuous, with huge body brilliantly balanced by sweet tannin and adequate acidity, this Cabernet possesses impeccable equilibrium, admirable purity, and a 50-second finish. It is one of Togni s great Cabernet Sauvignons, of which there have been many over the last quarter of a century. While masochists might enjoy it young, I would opt for cellaring it 4-5 years, and drink it over the following two decades. It is a brilliant achievement!

Extreme small production from a Californina unwittingly building a legend. Togni's 10 acres in St. Helena, Napa CA were planted in 1981. Most of his 2000 case annual production is sold to a mailing list on a first-come basis. His wines are known particualrly for their dense concentration, black, black fruit, notes of tobacco, cedar and earth. The 2001 is just perfect now, and can certainly be kept another 10 years.
