Closed nose, with just a hint of raspberry. The mouth is peppery and spicy, with pear fruit. The body is strong and alcoholic, and the finish is a bit metallic, which I didn't like.

an inky liquor on the nose combined with blackberries and purple plums. jammy on the palate with spice intermixed, dark chocolate, full, hearty and hot - 16.1% alcohol level.

Christmas spice on the nose. Huge flavor with lots of cinnamon. Big grippy tannins with a meandering finish. Really nice wine.

Beautiful nose of cherries, earth and blackcurrants. Mineral, acidic layer upfront with layers of eucalyptus and menthol. Grows progressively deeper on the mid-palate with coffee and treacle flavors dominating on the finish.

Rating: 87/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. A smaller yet more obvious wine, this one has more "modest" 15.4% alcohol, and its tilt toward chocolate comes at the cost of lowered fruitiness relative to its mate above. It starts out as a tad more open but then shows a trace of tart acidity in the latter palate and finish.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Still somewhat on the tight side in its keenly focused aromas of blackberries, light spices and glimpses of oak, this full-bodied wine avoids a drift into excess despite its 16.1% stated alcohol. The keys here are fruit that stays the course from front to back and well-integrated acidity that lends a pert edge to the proceedings. It is not a wine for the faint of heart, but so too is it not a blunderbuss. Fans of the style will find it priceworthy.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.
