Peter Michael Red Bordeaux Blend Knights Valley l'Esprit des Pavots 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

L’Esprit des Pavots literally means “The Spirit of the Poppies.” This wine was grown in and made from the original Les Pavots vineyard blocks that we completely replanted between 1996 and 1999 due to phylloxera. In replanting, we spared no expense, utilizing only the rarest and best clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 2004 vintage wine made from these young vine blocks captures the “spirit” of the Les Pavots terroir.

Extremely forward fruit, but wrapped in soft, almost lovely tannins. Great mouth feel. Very drinkable now.

Wine Advocate ReviewIn order to produce the finest wine possible under the Les Pavots label, Peter Michael has been culling out lots for a second wine. The knock-out 2004 LEsprit des Pavots (45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot) is more forward than its bigger sibling, displaying plenty of melted fudge, creme de cassis, charcoal, licorice, herbs, and smoky oak. Opulent, fleshy, and soft, it is both a hedonistic and intellectual turn-on. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.Wine Tasting NotesThe of LEsprit des Pavots displays all of the usual features, which characterize the Les Pavots terroir: blueberry, vanilla beans, licorice, chocolate, cedar and coffee. Spectacularly rich and intense, the fruit of the younger vines brings additional aromas of red cherries, plums and red pepper to the complex bouquet. Fruit forward and enjoyable at release time, this great wine should age well for a decade.

The second wine, which is called L Esprit des Pavots, is a noteworthy wine. The 2004 is soft, round, and a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. This 121-acre estate with 114 producing acres of vineyard all located in Knight s Valley continues to be at the top of their game and I can t recommend the wines highly enough
