What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Winemakers Notes

Bright ruby red color. The nose reveals black cherry, plum, and fig aromas. On the palate the wine displays cherry, cola, and red licorice flavors, with a sweet oak component adding depth and complexity. This is a supple, balanced wine with a lively cherry character that lingers on the finish. Alcohol 14.8%.

Reviews

Rating: 82/100 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger in Issue 15, 3rd Quarter, 2004 Deep blue ruby color, indeed almost black. An expressive nose of menthol and ultra ripe, slightly roasted fruit is framed by huge oak aromas followed by woody, sweet and thick flavors of impressive size and weight but there is no detail or nuance at all. To be sure, this is a very dramatic wine but there is precious little pinot character to be found.

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 108, May/June 2003 ($65) Saturated medium ruby. Knockout nose combines wild blackberry and strawberry, minerals, white pepper, road tar and menthol. Hugely sweet and concentrated, in a rather masculine style. Flavors reminiscent of Vosne-Romanee: wild black fruits, dark chocolate, dark rose, espresso and herbal tea. Packed with material. Finishes with very broad, horizontal, fine tannins and superb length.
