Peter Michael Chardonnay Knights Valley Ma Belle-Fille 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

95 points Robert Parker: Most of the Chardonnay clones used by Peter Michael are the old Wente clones, believed to have come from the grand cru vineyard just north of Beaune called Corton-Charlemagne. Peter Michael uses the Calera clone in their Ma Belle Fille estate vineyard. This has the highest elevation of any of their Chardonnay vineyards, with a southeast and southerly exposure. The 2014 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille (2,500 cases vs. 1,500 cases of the 2013) shows baked apples, brioche, nectarine and crisp apple skin notes in a meaty, almost tannic style. It is quite reserved and behaves more like a red wine in the glass than your typical Chardonnay. It should age nicely for a decade or more. (Dec 2015)

From the beginning, the wine growing philosophy was modeled on the French tradition infused with a few modern influences: One, the vineyard terroir would be the single most important feature. Two, the wines would be elegant rather than overstated. Three, there would be a hundred-year commitment to the development of a great estate. Read less
