Peter Michael Chardonnay Knights Valley Ma Belle-Fille 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

At the highest elevation on the estate, the marine influence on Ma Belle-Fille is greater, resulting in cooler daily temperatures in the summer and autumn months. Situated far above the summer fog ceiling and exposed to the southeast, the vineyard receives the very first rays of sunshine each morning and remains sunny all day long. This full exposure combined with cooler temperatures causes the fruit to mature earlier than the rest of our estate.

The 2005 Chardonnay La Carrière possesses a honeysuckle character in addition to orange, lemon, licorice, white currant, peach, and brioche. This stunning effort will undoubtedly put on weight over the next year.

The 2006 La Carrière (2,600 cases) has plenty of leesy notes intermixed with honeysuckle, orange rind, crushed rock, peach, and spice. The wine has beautifully integrated wood and is full-bodied. It is a beautiful mineral-laced Chardonnay to drink over the next 7-8 years. This 121-acre estate with 114 producing acres of vineyard all located in Knight's Valley continues to be at the top of their game and I can't recommend the wines highly enough.

The 2009 Chardonnay La Carriere (1,900 cases produced) reveals lovely notes of brioche, tropical fruit blossoms, oranges, white currants and lemon butter. Medium-bodied with beautiful fruit, good acidity and a touch of minerality, it should be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years.

The super-concentrated 2008 Chardonnay La Carriere (2,100 cases produced) exhibits that tell-tale greenish hue to its straw color (which I always consider a positive sign), boisterous alcohol (15.5%), deep, concentrated, buttery flavors of nectarines, oranges, honeysuckle and subtle earth as well as oak, and excellent acidity. This is a superb Chardonnay to drink over the next 7ndash;8 years.

Hazy greenish gold. Spicy, leesy, smoky aromas of lemon pith, melon and hazelnut. Velvety and concentrated, with emphatic lemony cut to the flavors of pit fruits and honeydew. Silky and seamless, with excellent finishing clarity and mineral-driven persistence. This elegant wine will be even better in a couple of years.

Firm, intense and complex, with fresh, vibrant, spicy pear, melon and apple flavors that turn rich and creamy, ending with a dash of hazelnut and spice. Drink now through 2011.

Green-tinged yellow. More precise, subtle aromas of stone fruits, minerals and nutmeg. A step up in energy and fruit intensity, with lovely clarity to the flavors of stone fruits, lemon, lime, spices and crushed rock. Finishes quite long and brisk, in need of at least a year of patience.

Tasting Notes:

The 2008 Ma Belle-Fille is spectacularly intense, boasting aromas of nectarine and Mirabelle plum, accented with wet stone-like minerality, brioche and lily flower notes. Generous in the mouth, rich and concentrated, the wine displays flavors of William pear, honey, dried almond, meringue, dry chamomile, orange rind and notes of baked Reinette apple. In the mouth, the wine is tactile, gourmand and extremely pure. Layered and seductive, the finish is very long.
