His family had a history of grape-growing and supplying their fruit for other winemakers, but he wanted to take it a step further and produce the wines from grapes grown at his own vineyards. In the 1950s, his son-in-law, Dr. Gustav Willkomm, began producing wine in the Rhine and then Pfalz regions, thus expanding the business. In the 1960s, the portfolio grew to include wines from the Reingau and Nahe. Today, the Peter Mertes brand produces wine from all over Germany as well as other global locations, offering a wide range of styles.

I bought a 50cl bottle of this wine for ten pounds. It is from the Rhine valley in Germany and is made from the Reisling grape. It is harvested very late in the year in order to allow the devfelopment of a fungus called Botrytis which contributes to the taste of the wine..I drank my bottle last weekend with a plate of bread and blue cheese. It is obviously very sweet almost like honey or syrup and there is plenty of fruit there [think peaches or apricots].I enjoyed it and thought it the equal of a good Sauternes
A fruity late harvest wine with a mineralic taste and aromas of peach and melon. Light and lively with a pleasant sweetness and freshness. Pairs well with meat and fish dishes, salads or cold cuts.
