Peter Mertes established his first winery in 1924 in the Minheim village in Mosel, Germany. His family had a history of grape-growing and supplying their fruit for other winemakers, but he wanted to take it a step further and produce the wines from grapes grown at his own vineyards. Peter Mertes established his first winery in 1924 in the Minheim village in Mosel, Germany. His family had a history of grape-growing and supplying their fruit for other winemakers, but he wanted to take it a step further and produce the wines from grapes grown at his own vineyards. In the 1950s, his son-in-law, Dr. Gustav Willkomm, began producing wine in the Rhine and then Pfalz regions, thus expanding the business. In the 1960s, the portfolio grew to include wines from the Reingau and Nahe.
