Peter Lehmann Shiraz Wildcard 2006
The third consecutive great vintage in the Barossa following on from 2004 and 2005 is fulfilling the winemakers’ expectations for producing red wines of exceptional quality. Selected from low yielding, mature Barossa Shiraz vineyards, the 2006 Futures was fermented and then macerated on skins for up to 2 weeks, with some partial barrel fermentation. Following processing and clarification, the wine was matured for 15 months in French oak hogsheads prior to bottling. This is an excellent partner for braised lamb shanks, richly flavoured casseroles, and of course, perfect with a superlative matured cheddar. Futures Shiraz is classic Barossa Shiraz. And in keeping with the tradition of Peter Lehmann’s Barossa Shiraz, this is an eminently enjoyable wine when released from the cellars, but will faithfully reward long term cellar maturation.
Peter Lehmann Wines is one of Australia’s most respected and innovative winemakers, creating wines that delight wine lovers around the globe. Winemaking operations are carried out at a single site located near Tanunda, in the heart of the internationally famous Barossa Valley, South Australia.
This wine surpassed my expectations when paired with some simple mushroom and onion pizza. It has a smokey quality and the tannins were quite soft in this situation. Drinkable wine with normal Shiraz characteristics, price makes it a bargain.
