Member Reviews for Peter Lehmann Shiraz Barossa Valley Stonewell
Add your review11/26/10 This is a big, beautiful wine with elegant balance and evolving complexity that grows more elegant and beautiful throughout four hours after uncorking, and is most likely still good for eight to ten years in the cellar. At opening, big brawny dark bramble fruits, along with fresh cut beets, jump from the bottle and flow to the glass. Wild fragrances adorn the composition, adding notes of dirt and clay, wild game and must, forest herbs and wild flowers, cloves and dark leafy greens to the changing aromatic harmonies. The palate launches a bit spicy and needs to tame for at least an hour. While pepper remains strong for several hours to enliven the finish, flavors of blackberry and currants enter at an hour to broaden the attack, along with robust notes of raddishes and beets, which bring the garden into the medley. The central core of dark fruit expands to include tart cherry at two hours, and the spice rack adds nutmeg. Chocolate joins the party at three hours. Beets and blackberries stay the longest, lingering with pepper and spice until the dance is done.

92 Points - Wine Advocate Stonewell Shiraz is a muscular wine impenetrable black in colour with a powerful palate of dark chocolate, prunes, liquorice and hints of mint. Fermentation in mainly new French and a small portion of American oak hogsheads, and extended time on skins post fermentation adds greater tannin structure which is integrated seamlessly to create a wine of great stature. The pedigree of these vineyards and the knowledge that has been passed from each winemaking generation to the next assures us that Stonewell Shiraz is a wine of great longevity.

The fruit was sourced from several of the Barossa’s top addresses. It offers up aromas of toasty oak, spice box (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg), asphalt, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a structured, tightly wound wine in which black fruits and chocolate make an appearance. It will benefit from another 8-10 years in the cellar and should drink well through 2027. -Jay Miller, October 2007. 92 - Wine Spectator Big, rich and generous with its green olive-accented cherry and exotic spice flavors. Finishes with firm tannins and persistence to the flavors. A classic Barossa Shiraz that has a long way to go. Best from 2010 through 2020. -Harvey Steiman, February 28, 2007. 90 Points - Wine Enthusiast More lifted and aromatic than some other vintages of the Stonewell Shiraz, the 2002 features red fruit flavors and a slightly herbal tinge. Tannins are creamy-smooth, yet the acids are a bit hard-edged at this stage. Give it another few years to round into form; drink from 2010 - 2015. - Joe Czerwinski, November 01, 2007. .
