Pétalos del Bièrzo 2007
From 60 year-old vines, and farmed biodynamically, the latest triumph fromAlvaro Palacios, completing his triptych of Spanish vineyards ( the others, ofcourse, are in Rioja and Priorat). The intriguing Mencia grape is an earlyripener, but, with old vine pedigree, holds a wonderful depth of colour and isfar from reminiscent to Cabernet Franc, as was once alleged. A fascinating noseof herbs and spice gives way to fruits dominated by damson and dark cherries;the fascination is held on the palate with notes of tea, bitter chocolate,macerated fruit and even something a little chalky evidenced. Blueberry and grapes on the nose. A very clean, pure, and unaltered wine with bright cherry and baked blueberry pie flavors. Very nice and approachable with light tannins and a summery feel.
Fragrant aromas of cola, blue and black fruit (black cherries, blueberries, plums), oak, and vanilla. Blueberry and plum flavors join harmoniously with notes of earth, oak, and violets on the finish. Well-structured and balanced wine with nice acidity that paired well with steak.
A subtle bouquet of mineral, red fruits, smoke and leather lead enticingly to a multilayered explosion as this superb offering slides across the palate. Tarragon, basil and mineral all play a part in the sensual awakening this wine engenders. Still young, this one needs to breath at least an hour, but then is wonderfully approachable and well balanced. A long lingering finish completes this exceptional experience. 91.
It seemed rather closed and very herbaceous when first opened, but the longer it was open the more I enjoyed it.
This is more fruit friendly than I expected, and reminds me of some Grenaches. My sense is that it will improve over the next year or two!

Ruby-red. Vibrant red berry and cherry aromas are underscored by pungent minerality and rose; this smells like a great Chambolle-Musigny. Sweet raspberry and floral pastille flavors are enlivened by brisk acidity and gain sweetness with air. Very suave, focused and strikingly pure wine with superb complexity and poise.
BiodynamicThe entry-level wine (what an entry!) is the 2007 Petalos del Bierzo, 100% Mencia from vineyards ranging in age from 40 to 90 years. It spends its first few weeks in new French barriques before transfer to seasoned oak for 6 to 10 months. Saturated purple in color, it offers up a super-fragrant bouquet of smoke, violets, mineral, wild blueberry, and black raspberry. Fruity yet complex on the palate, it has superb depth, grip, and balance. This sexy effort can be enjoyed over the next six years but only hedonists need apply. Descendientes de Jose Palacios’ first vintage was 1999.
The 2006 Petalos del Bierzo is purple-colored with a fragrant nose of violets, lavender, mulberry, and blueberry. Ripe, supple, and sweetly fruited, it will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2015.

This is Descendientes' so-called starter Bierzo, but it rises above the tried and true value zone to exhibit mineral, crushed violet petals, graham cracker and pure dark-fruit aromas. The palate is smooth and plush, with lush black-fruit flavors, easygoing tannins and some creamy length. It's not as vivid as the 2005, but it's still mighty impressive.
This sinuous red delivers both intensity and elegance, with smoky oak notes floating around boysenberry, mineral and licorice flavors. The tannins are well-integrated and give way to a perfumed finish. Drink now through 2015.
