Perrucci Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Mountains 2005
The follow up vintage to our recent award winner is another hit. Over 50% of the Cabernet grapes for this vintage came from our Estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains with the remainder from the Pedregal vineyard in Paicines. Though the two vineyards are very similar in climate and grape growing philosophy, the subtle differences are what really make the two a perfect match. Combined with a small amount of Merlot from the Regan vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this wine is a balance of fruit, herbs, mild tannins, coffee and a hint of smoke. Already in the bottle one year, this vintage is just now coming into its prime and will drink well for another 3-5 years.
Slight vegetation on the nose offset by vanilla oak & smoky cherry aromas; Very flavorful on entry with notes of oak, smoke & tobacco & burnt berry; nice finish, but pricey at $32.

This is the type of wine you expect from a boutique winery with a vision. Mainline California cabs are a dime a dozen and who remembers the last great mainstream cab they had? The wine is one that makes you think about what you are drinking. It invites you deeper with each sip as the aroma penetrates deep into your nose. With every taste the wine envelopes your tongue with dark rich notes of nicely rounded tannins, crisp unsweetened cocoa, dried cherries, Fig, and vanilla. I had this wine both with a nice fillet as well as lamb on the grill. We ran out of wine way too fast.
Cabernet is the king of red wines and our 2004 vintage does not disappoint. The soft tannins are well balanced by a rich coffee and vanilla nose with ripe cherry and currant overtones flowing throughout the palate. Cabernet is a perfect wine to have with rich foods, red meat and chocolate. Ours is no exception but you also might also want to drink this one alone. It has the muscle and backbone to stand on its own. This is a wine that will continue to improve over the next three to five years.
