Perrin les Christins Vacqueras 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

The vineyard Vinsobres 'Les Cornuds' comes from our vineyards at Domaine de la Bicarelle and from the Julien estate (45 hectares/111 acres) that lies right by the small village of Cornuds, on the northern side of the Vinsobres appellation. This vineyard consists of a single block that runs over some magnificent sloped and terraced hillside facing South-southwest at an average height of 300 metres above sea. This northern extremity of the Southern Rhône area is particularly suited to the syrah grape. Geology Stony and sandy marl on the slopes, with quartenary stony alluviums on the terraces. Grape varieties 50% Syrah, 50% Grenache Winemaking The wine is made in our own Perrin & Fils winery. All the grapes are de-stemmed. Syrah is macerated in truncated tapered wooden vats, with cap punching and pumping-over. Stainless-steel tanks are used for the grenache, and the two varieties are blended after malolactic fermentation. Maturing 80% in stainless steel, 20% in barrels that have held two vintages. A further 6 months ageing in bottles before shipping. Tasting notes The colour is a deep ruby with a purple edge. The syrah grape shows on the nose, with red fruit, black cherry and liquorice. On the palate this combines power with elegance, with its velvety, fleshy texture. The finish shows the lift typical of the cooler parts of the Rhône valley. Serving 18°C (65°F) with lightly seasoned food.

Fabulous wine intense deep red/purple colour and garnet hue. Nose: intense raspberry/plum, mixed in with some beautiful violet, spice and earthy notes with a touch of wood shavings. Palate: red fruit and spice carries through on the palate as with the noticeable tannins. this is a complex wine more suited to have with food to bring out more of the complexities within the wine. 3.5-4 out of 5

Great wine, will certainly improve over the next 3-5 years. Super Southern Rhone flavor profile with a finish that lasts for 30 seconds. Dark red fruits on a very well made wine. Integrated tannins that will smooth out over time. Impressed! Looking forward to my next 3 bottles, would buy more, but no room in the cellar!
