Editorial Reviews for Perrin et Fils Cotes du Rhone Villages Red

Gamy pomegranate fruit hits the nose followed by notes of juniper, violet, and a whisper of coffee bean. This is rich and soft in the mouth, downright supple with a fine tension of sweet dark slightly stewy fruits and chalky, savory tannins. This lacks some acidity but does delivery good, rich woodsy, huckleberry and black berry flavors right through the mineral laced and slightly meaty, umami toned finish. This has a lot to offer, though it is a bit ponderous. 84pts

A splendid little wine by Perrin et fils, this regular Southern Rhone offering is redolent of wild blueberry and bilberry with soft tannin and blended red fruit mid-palate - perfect for current consumption from a highly touted vintage (which, in this instance, actually draws a bull's eye). Smooth, slightly sweet, creamy style is perfect at this price point. An excellent Grenache-based wine and highly recommended to the budget-minded.

Resinous and brambly with some damp earth. Bright cherry fruit with a perfect amount of syrah spice. Lovely.

Lovely deep red with blackish hints of colour. Fragrant with dark cherries, spices, herbs and a wonderful soft yet earthy character. Good tannins but not aggressive, gentle touch of wood. The wine fills the mouth with flavour and leaves the palate with satisfying crispness and rich flavour.

The 2007 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Perrin Reserve may be the finest wine yet made under this moniker. This sells for a whopping $12 a bottle. A blend of essentially equal parts Syrah and Grenache, it offers a deep ruby/purple hue along with sweet blackberry, black currant, char, licorice, and smoky herb notes. Drink this dense, Provencal-styled, seductive, lush 2007 over the next 3-4 years.

External Review

A sensational bargain, the 2009 Perrin et Fils Cotes du Rhone Reserve red is composed of 60% Grenache (from the estate vineyards at Prebois), 20% Syrah (from the estate vineyards in Vinsobres), and 20% Mourvedre. It offers lots of black cherry fruit, underbrush, licorice, pepper, and spice notes in a medium-bodied, richly fruity style with no hard edges. Their 2008 was a surprisingly good effort, but the 2009 is slightly riper and bigger.

External Review

The deep ruby/purple-colored 2001 Cotes du Rhone Reserve includes more Syrah in the blend than the 2000. It possesses excellent acidity as well as a ripe, long finish. This negociant is becoming a terrific source for value-priced southern Rhone wines that are faithful to their appellations of origin.

The 2007 Cotes du Rhone Reserve red (60% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre) possesses beautiful crunchy, juicy, blackberry and cherry fruit as well as hints of underbrush, pepper, and black cherries. Medium-bodied and silky-textured, it is ideal for drinking over the next 3-4 years.

External Review

This light, fun wine starts off with aromas of bright, bouncy cherries and peaches. Then it continues that theme in the mouth, with crunchy fresh fruit flavors of stone fruit, picking up some spice and mineral nuances on the finish. Drink now-2008.

A real sleeper of the vintage is the 2006 Perrin et Fils Reserve Cotes du Rhone, which comes from their vineyards in Grand Pre and Vinsobres. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre, the wine displays excellent black cherry fruit intermixed with some truffle, roasted herb, licorice, and spice. It has excellent freshness, an invigorating, rich mid-palate, and good acidity and spice in the finish. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

A beautiful deep red hue that seems almost opaque. The nose shows caramel and spices that mingle with red berry fruit. The palate is full and deep, with fine tannins and good length.Perrin Réserve R
