Peregrine Pinot Noir 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Peregrine Wines is located amongst the rugged mountains and lakes of Queenstown, Central Otago, in the South Island of New Zealand. Central Otago`s climate is the closest they have in New Zealand to a continental climate. Founded and owned by Greg Hay, Peregrineís prime focus is on growing premium Pinot Noir from their estate managed vineyards. The fruit for the is sourced from low-cropping vineyards in the Cromwell basin, with a small amount coming from Gibbston. Traditional winemaking techniques are used to produce this Pinot Noir, enabling gentle tannin extraction and creating a complex foundation of flavours and textures. This is a rich and concentrated wine with appealing ripe plum and black cherry fruit. It has a good mouth feel and persistent finish.

Peregrine Wines is located in the Gibbston region of Central Otago – just an easy 20 minute drive from Queenstown, deep in the heart of the South Island of New Zealand. Snow capped mountains dominate the landscape for at least 8 months of the year, with vineyards in the valleys below - a continental climate giving the area hot and dry summers with cool nights. Peregrine's prime focus is on growing premium Pinot Noir and white varieties from their estate managed vineyards. These are all meticulously hand-tended and farmed under a sustainable philosophy. Peregrine has its vineyards in the two top regions of the area, Gibbston and Cromwell. These areas typically produce intensely flavoured wines of finesse and elegance with the predominantly schist soils adding mineral complexity. From modest beginnings in 1998, the label has grown from a ‘virtual’ operation to a modern winery containing lots of stainless steel, oak barriques and diligent (sometimes sleep deprived) employees. The winemaking approach, however, has always been along traditional lines with minimal intervention to let the unique fruit flavours of Central Otago do the talking. Central Otago is a challenging region in which to produce quality wines but we feel that the consistent success of our wine is well worth the effort. Read less

This particular wine from Peregrine is called Saddleback- Central Otago NZ Garnet/ruby red hue Violet and cherry, pensil shavings, leather(?) Cherry, mushroom(?),earthy lots of length with fruity yet acidic finish. I think with a bit more age this wine will become more elegant.

Peregrine's wines have settled into a consistent groove, marrying subtle herb and mossy notes with an enveloping core of black cherry fruit. The 2007 is medium in body, with a slightly creamy texture and a supple, bacon-tinged finish that avoids bein... Wine Enthusiast. Quite a rich, sweet style with a contrast between dark cherry and lifted floral characters - a blend of two regions bringing together different ripeness levels perhaps? Appealing wine but slightly simple. Silken-textured Pinot. Bob Campbell, MW. A Pinot Noir wine from Otago in New Zealand. 2007 Peregrine Pinot Noir 750ml
