Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie Clos des Briords 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

You can read the lot number on this bottle of non-vintage, due to it falling outside of the Archaic French winemaking regulations, bottle of deliciously pure Cabernet Franc. There's always a lightness and delicacy to reds wines produced by masters of white wine, Pepiere Muscadets are second to none, and this is no exception. Deft and crisp with soft red fruits and a crunchy minerality that is refreshing and adds length tot he finish. This is not a wine to think too much about, just enjoy it, and wonder how the bottle got emptied so quickly. 89pts

Full of fruit, but very dry. Refreshing, and goes well with seafood (I had with a smoked salmon reuben...delicious).

Neutral, lightly effervescent wine that is easily submissive to the seafood we drank it with. Not a fruity wine, somewhat chalky, standoffish and lightly citrus, maybe.

The basic (but by no means simple) Pepiere 2009 Muscadet de Sevre et Maine Sur Lie is scented with green apple, lime, quarry dust, and a hint of elder flower. Low-key, soft to the touch for Muscadet, but highly refreshing; and tinged with citrus rind, crushed stone, and iodine, it finishes with mouth-watering persistence. I would plan to enjoy it over the next 18 months.

The hot new summertime white, Muscadet, hails from the mouth of the Loire River on the west coast of France, making it an excellent choice with any salty snack foods or light seafood dishes (especially shellfish), though it drinks really well on its own. Medium-bodied and crisp, but with a slight creaminess from the sur lie aging, the Pépière is a stellar alternative for Chardonnay drinkers looking for something less oaky, or Sauvignon Blanc drinkers looking for something with a little more kick!

Great, refeshing Muscadet with vibrant minerality. Of course, this is perfect for oysters, but with its good round body, it's also great with light poultry or vegetable dishes. From a Practicing Organic estate.

An old-vines cuvee of Muscadet from a single plot vineyard planted in schist. The Clos des Briords' deep clay / schist soil over granite has excellent drainage, which means Ollivier's precious 70+ year old vines never sit with wet feet. Jolly perfectionist Ollivier allows longer hang-time before harvest for optimal maturity - all this attention concentrates the fruit creating a more powerful Muscadet (though that sounds like an oxymoron.) the Clos is very mineral-driven and quite austere in its youth, rather than fruity and light. Over a few months, or even years, if one can wait for it, it develops much complexity in aromatics and structure.

Light, bright straw. White flowers, lemon curd, orange peel and minerals on the nose. Vibrant, precise citrus and floral flavors are underscored by zesty minerals, which add clarity and tangy lift. Pure and brisk on the finish, which repeats the orange note. This surprisingly approachable wine reminds me a bit of chenin blanc.

Bold and extroverted, this has an unusually ripe fruitiness while remaining firmly encased in a brisk structure, strongly marked by pungent aromas of oyster shells and crushed stones.

This is a Cabernet Franc from Marc Ollivier, best-known for his incredible Muscadets. This is equally delicious, full of raspberry fruit and tomato on the nose and palate. Dry and whimsical with low alcohol and lots of food-friendly acidity.
