Pepe Montepulciano D Abruzzo 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dirty and volatile on the nose with spicy clay, subtle wet dog and soaring fruit notes. In the mouth there continues to be some volatility and mustiness but the fruit wins out on the long succulent cherry finish. Classic Pepe.

Tasted alongside a 90 Beaucastel with hanger steak- The best MdA's I've had are an intriguing combination of delicate strawberry fruit with significant palate weight and structure- this bottle was no exception- wonderfully ripe strawberries on the nose wih great texture, balance and length on the palate. great stuff.

similar note on moast of the bottles- simply stunning wine. amazing that this producer was virtually unknown until recently and had this sitting in his cellar.

Emidio Pepe is the king of producers in Abruzzo. His Montepulciano offers and array of impossibly ripe, dark berries on the nose alongside stony minerality, garrigue-y flavors, and a healthy dose of gaminess. Decant for best results.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from Emidio Pepe bares little relation to most other wines of the same appellation. These wines are big and bold, filled with intense flavors of dried black cherries, licorice and wild herbs.

(PO) Adored by connoisseurs and novices alike, this artisanal red wine from central Italy deserves to be enjoyed by all who yearn to taste a rare wine of terroir. This vintage was a standout - freshly macerated red berries on the front palate - red currants, cherries - and violets and game on the finish. In spite of the age, incredibly fresh on the palate with an elegant texture. All hand-harvested, unsulfured, and unfiltered to preserve the goodness of this versatile grape, Montepulciano.

From famed winemaker Emidio Pepe comes this brooding, bold Montepulciano with rustic dark fruit, herbs and bold tannins.

An elegant, less rustic, middle-aged Pepe, yet with all the woodsy, earthy, leathery characters we would still expect. With big tannis and an outrageous complexity and concentration this wine could use a decanting before serving.
