Penley Estate Shiraz Coonawarra Hyland 2006
An elegant, medium-bodied wine with lifted aromas of ripe berry and spice integrated with savory, smoky notes. The middle palate is loaded with silky oak tannin to balance the rich fruit flavors. The finish is long and juicy with just a hint of oak. The Hyland Shiraz is best enjoyed over the next 1-5 years.

A little sweetness on the nose recalls sweetened coffee but the base of pepper, beef and ripe blackberry is cool and composed. There's a touch of mint and some background oak but pretty restrained and balanced nose. Juicy and medium bodied with a bit more of an oak tone in the mouth, the tannins are very fine grained adding a silky feel to the mid-palate. Nice purity here with very fresh fruit that has a nice spicy kick on the backend. There is a touch of heat on the finish but plenty of buffering material. It could be a bit longer but is a very solid effort ending with a light flourish of sandy minerality. 87pts
This open with some bright cassis syrup, it’s a touch hot and sweet smelling with candied fruit and fresh apple tones. Turns moderately spicy with a touch of butter and brett lurking in the background. Sweet on entry in a fruit bombish kind of way yet with plenty of acidity and good, soft, extracted tannins, very fresh appley quality on the palate, light spice and yellow floral tones, light finish, not a lot of follow through 88pts
Rich, deep dark nose of licorice and a bit of black cherry. It's a hot nose, but not too terrible. Palate is rich, but shows a lot of brightness and a good, refreshing acidity. That alcohol -- wow. The tannins are pretty smooth, good deep dark fruit flavors of black pepper and a bit of spice. Finishes with dried fruit and a bit of cedar.
15% alcohol, and you feel it on the nose, but in the mouth its much better balanced. Very nice, mineral and mocha notes. Its medium acidity, but it somehow feels lighter in the mouth than I'd expect. Nice eucalyptus. The finish is all baked prunes and coffee and licorice.
Very peppery on the nose, with currant tones, and it made me yearn for a well-done flank steak. Blackberry and truffle on the attack, and a sharp and tannic finish that would have to be more buttery to satisfy.
Love the nose on this wine - You can really feel the alcohol and smell the fruits. Acidity is right in the middle - feels well balanced in the mouth - not at first though, needed to open up. A bit of mocha and coffee/pepper - nice suprise...for the price!
huge nose of black fruits; slight bitterness on the end big big taste and moderate tanins. Black currant and black fuits. long after taste
Gentle tanins, this opened up fairly quickly - showing tart fruit and subtle black pepper on the finish. A very nice medium/full bodied blend; great for the price.

Deep ruby. Red- and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by cigar box and floral qualities. At once sweet and spicy with suave red and dark berry flavors silky tannins and good mineral lift. Nicely balanced shiraz with excellent purity and finishing vivacity.
