Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay Penfolds Tasmania. Australia Chardonnay 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Yattarna derives from an Indigenous word meaning ‘little by little’ or ‘gradually’. This utterly unmistakable Australian name, which evokes associations with organic momentum and vintage-by-vintage effort, captures the true essence and culture of Penfolds’ winemaking philosophy.Ever since the first vintage in 1995, the evolution of Yattarna has become one of Penfolds’ most fascinating stories and nearly two decades of dedicated research, blending and refinement is now producing a revelational release each vintage. Modern day Yattarna has become even finer, more elegant and focused, with ageing potential of up to a decade in strong vintages. Yattarna is redefining Australian chardonnay at a time when premium Australian chardonnay has never been better. On the nose, it is at once, noticeably different to the Bin A Chardonnay. This Chardonnay expression exudes a limey citrus restraint where cantaloupe, cured bacon rind and subtle, spicy oak give way to complex nut kernel and pecan pie complexities. On palate an explosion of citrus and white stone fruits prelude a layered and creamy custard apple-like mid palate. A core of fine, mineral, lemony acid skates across the entire palate, projecting great length of flavour and linearity. Rabbit, candied lemon peel, pumpkin 'tears', bacon, coffee and coriander seed or Kingfish carpaccio would pair beautifully with this sublime wine.

Tired of boring old wines from Australia? No? Then you can probably thank Penfolds Wines. Penfolds, founded in 1844 by Mary and Dr. Penfold (Mary gets top billing since she took care of most of the early management and winemaking responsibilities), has completely revolutionized not only its own product lines throughout the years, but also many wines in Australia as a whole. The wine produced by Penfolds was originally prescribed as tonic wines for anaemic patients, with the wine made from Grenache. By 1870, with 60 acres under vine, they were producing many more wines. In the 1920s and 1930s, Penfolds was known for its fortified wine, like many other wineries in the area. 1943 marked the start of a massive expansion for Penfolds Winery, with first the acquisition of Auldana Vineyard and its winery, and then the purchase of Kalimna Vineyard in 1945. By the end of the decade, they owned vineyards in McLaren Vale, Griffith, the Hunter Valley, and Minchinbury. Around the same time, winemaker Max Schubert returned from oversees with a completely new vision for the future of the winery. In the 50s, he started experimenting with the red wine he called Grange, which is a mix of primarily Shiraz and a little Cabernet Sauvignon, and by the 1960s the wine had spread across the Australian wine industry. Not wanting to stop with merely one of the most successful wine projects in the history of Australia, Penfolds Wines started the “White Grange” project in the 1990s, leading to the immensely popular and publicized release of the Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay. Peter Gago became their Chief Winemaker in 2002, and he, along with three winemakers in charge of red wine and one in charge of white, continue the tradition of experimentation and evolution. Colour of pale wee. Aroma of fresh chips with plenty of salt and vinegar. Tastes bright and fruity. Didn't match with food - this is my fault, not the wine's. (I tried to match it with a tuna mornay... the mornay overwhelmed it.)

Relying on the Penfolds quality name -I purchased a bottle of Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay 2007 at Woolworths Liquor in Griffith, NSW, Australia, 15 October 2009. Reduced to $10.97. The nose evoked honey but on the palate was a displeasing after taste similar to honey when over heated. I summise that the wine in this bottle is oxidised - a lingering after taste of fermented straw with acidic overtones..

Koonunga Hill whites are well proportioned wines with distinctive primary fruit characters and good levels of intensity. They are a step up from the Rawson's Retreat whites with more concentration and fruit power. The Chardonnay which is matured for several months in small French oak barriques is a richer style with plenty of varietal definition and creamy flavors. The Koonunga Hill Chardonnay is considered by many to be amongst Australia's best value whites delivering wine quality at an affordable pricepoint.

Frisches Bouquet nach Melonen und Nektarinen duftend. Feine Tannine, ausgewogen und harmonisch, weicher und sauberer Abgang. Ein sehr angenehm zu trinkender Wein.

Leuchtendes Gelb.
