Tired of boring old wines from Australia? No? Then you can probably thank Penfolds Wines. Penfolds, founded in 1844 by Mary and Dr. Penfold (Mary gets top billing since she took care of most of the early management and winemaking responsibilities), has completely revolutionized not only its own product lines throughout the years, but also many wines in Australia as a whole. The wine produced by Penfolds was originally prescribed as tonic wines for anaemic patients, with the wine made from Grenache. By 1870, with 60 acres under vine, they were producing many more wines. In the 1920s and 1930s, Penfolds was known for its fortified wine, like many other wineries in the area. 1943 marked the start of a massive expansion for Penfolds Winery, with first the acquisition of Auldana Vineyard and its winery, and then the purchase of Kalimna Vineyard in 1945. By the end of the decade, they owned vineyards in McLaren Vale, Griffith, the Hunter Valley, and Minchinbury. Around the same time, winemaker Max Schubert returned from oversees with a completely new vision for the future of the winery. In the 50s, he started experimenting with the red wine he called Grange, which is a mix of primarily Shiraz and a little Cabernet Sauvignon, and by the 1960s the wine had spread across the Australian wine industry. Not wanting to stop with merely one of the most successful wine projects in the history of Australia, Penfolds Wines started the “White Grange” project in the 1990s, leading to the immensely popular and publicized release of the Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay. Peter Gago became their Chief Winemaker in 2002, and he, along with three winemakers in charge of red wine and one in charge of white, continue the tradition of experimentation and evolution. Leave it on the shelf. Off balance. Overly tannic, although the cab should have balanced it out more.

A strong rubber smell. In mouth no so bad, with a long kind of olives and the usual hot tobacco finish.

A pleasing cranberry color. Cranberry, black current and fig on the nose. Black pepper, tart cranberry and earthy with a vegetable hint in taste. This wine is very hot on alcohol at first, so its best to give it time to breathe before drinking. Not bold or overpowering, so a good wine to enjoy with a meal, but not an exciting wine to drink on its own.

Not bad.... but I cant see how this was rated a 91? It is good, but not all that flavorful and a little acidic. Let it breath and it will imnprove quite a bit. That said, still not a bad buy under 8$.

Lamb chops, grilled. Alone before dinner, a easy to drink, fruity and mellow pleasure with cherry flavors. But it also holds up with the lamb chops, with continued cherry flavors and a slight spritz finish with very light tannins. Easy to gulp, but fun to sip to tease out the flavors. Not a greatly complex wine, but not just drinkable either. And for the price--a steal.Next day for lunch with veggie pasta: Pretty flat and a bit tart. But, that night for dinner with pork chops, a good smooth flavor with fruit and clean finish. Not as nice as first night, but good.

First try with lamb chops--not good. Could not find much flavor or fruit or aroma or aftertaste. Tart blueberry at best. The following night, with pork chops, it was drinkable, but nothing special. A not-that-cheap, bland red at best.

Weingut: PenfoldsRegion: Barossa ValleyRebsorte: Cabernet Sauvignon, ShirazInhalt: 0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 13,5 Vol.%Lagerfähigkeit: 3 - 5 Jahre ab Jahrgang Fassreife: in Barriques gereift (12 Monate)Empfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16-18°C Rotwein > Australien > Barossa Valley

Launched in '76, this blend of Shiraz and Cabernet represents the value-driven introduction to Penfold's stellar line of Australian reds. Consistent high-quality has been achieved in a firm, fruity wine that also has great aging potential.

Wine Tasting NotesPremium Shiraz grapes from some of South Australia's best vineyards have been selected to maintain this consistent style and quality. The wine has excellent structure and length, and while it is ready for drinking now, will gain further complexity over the next two to four years.

gehaltvoller, trockener Rotwein. Pulsierende dunkelrote Farbe.

Wine Advocate ReviewRated 91The Cabernet and Shiraz blends begin with the 2006 Shiraz (78%) Cabernet Sauvignon (22%) Koonunga Hill. Purple-colored, the wine offers meaty black currant, blackberry, and blueberry aromas. On the palate, the wine exhibits remarkable focus and structure for its humble price. The fruit is grapy and primary as well as intensely flavored. It should evolve for several years and drink well through 2022 if not longer. It is a fantastic value.Wine Tasting NotesDeep red. The nose shows notes of sweet dark plum fruits, red berries and white fruit cake aromatics. Complex spice and pepper aromas arise almost instantly upon the initial pour. There is a mocha/ coffee and vanilla lift stemming from the balanced well integrated use of seasoned oak. The palate is bright and substantial. This wine has a medium bodied, solid structure with generous dark chocolate and berried flavors and obvious, grainy tannins. The fleshy, sweet core of fruit and flavor seemingly effortlessly facilitates impressive length.
