User Reviews for Penfolds 'Koonunga Hill' Shiraz
Add your reviewThe first day this wine was pretty awful--very very bitter. On the second day though, it was so, so much better. It was smooth, but with a hint of peppery spice. So good!
This one got better from day 1 to day 2 to day 3. Day 1 it was not very good at all and I could understand the previous reviewer. When I threw it in the fridge on day 3 and poured a glass it was actually quite nice, tasted like a Shiraz should with red fruits, some dark fruit, and a little pepper on the semi-dry finish. Considering the three day average I give it 3 glasses, but it was a very enjoyable 4 on day 3. I would encourage anyone who buys a bottle of this to open, then put a bottle topper in it, and let it sit for a day or two, then try it.
This a very aromatic wine! We uncorked the bottle and left it open for about an hour before pouring. Upon walking into the room after my boyfriend poured the wine, I could start smelling the nose. The aroma at that point has notes of cranberry/raisin, but still was very tight. Color is a pleasing dark red-burgundy. After swirling in a large glass for a few minutes, the nose gained more heat and became less fruity. It gains an herbal aspect, which my boyfriend and I thought might be something of a sage/tarragon combo. Upon tasting, I was rather dissatisfied. It has an very bitter front. The wine has a lot of heat, which makes for an unpleasant sensation on the palette, basically numbing the tongue and cheeks. The finish can simply be described as bitter.

This is polished, delivering a bright mouthful of plum and berry flavors. Remains open and inviting through the fine-grained finish. Drink now through 2012.
Fresh and lively, a juicy mouthful of blueberry, blackberry and cedar flavors that remain crisp through the finish. Drink now.
