Penfolds Koonunga Hill Semillon Chardonnay 2004
Koonunga Hill is a wine produced by Penfolds, one of Australia’s most famous wineries. The wine is named for the location of one of their Barossa Valley vineyards, first produced by winemaker Don Ditter in 1976 as a Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Today, Chief Winemaker is Peter Gago, and the range consists of the flagship blend as well as single varietal Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Cabernet/Merlot blend and Chardonnay.
RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
A butter bomb on a diet, the 2004 vintage from Penfold’s affordable Koonunga Hill line is a trimmer version of oaked chardonnay that cuts the fat, while still managing to dole out deliciously dangerous levels of aroma and flavour. Small barrique aging has led to a liberal dollop of oak spice, char, and buttered popcorn on the nose. Melon, apple crisp, and vanilla are added to the mix on the palate, which nonetheless manages to seem pleasantly tight and restrained. Low in flab, high in character.
