Food Pairings for Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
Forgot to review this while drinking it but I wasn't blown away. Less fruit than I typically expect from an Aussie Shiraz (probably because of the Cabernet in there). It was drinkable, and I'd buy it again in a pinch, but for $10 I think there are better wines out there.
Just OK. seemed to have a strong plummy taste. 71% shiraz.

A solid red, with peppery, slightly gamy notes around a core of juicy blackberry fruit. Finishes with fine tannins. Drink now through 2004.
A gentle, nicely modulated style offers a welcome balance between ripe blueberry and black pepper flavors with a sweet leather note as the finish persists. Drink now through 2009.
This is polished, delivering a bright mouthful of plum and berry flavors. Remains open and inviting through the fine-grained finish. Drink now through 2012.
Penfolds has been producing the Shiraz/Cabernet Koonunga Hill for 30 years and it remains an excellent bargain (early releases cost about $1 a bottle). The 2004, an outstanding blend of 62% Shiraz and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, was aged in old 300 liter hogsheads. Its dense purple color is accompanied by scents of blackberries, truffles, old leather, licorice, and pepper. Heady ripeness, a fleshy mouthfeel, decent acidity, and a long finish suggest it should drink well for 10-12 years.
Fresh and lively, a juicy mouthful of blueberry, blackberry and cedar flavors that remain crisp through the finish. Drink now.
A touch of gaminess weaves through the solid cherry and spice flavors, finishing with an open texture. Drink now.
Very dark. Powerful roasted-almond aromas, licorice, currant and smoke; warm and generous. Tastes supple, with ample fruit and sturdy tannins. Very dry. The bland is 80% Shiraz and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet, a multi-district blend based on Barossa, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra fruit, has become a Penfolds classic with a reputation for over-delivery of quality at its pricepoint. Winemakers seek to maintain its style, weight and concentration each year, regardless of vintage conditions. Shiraz usually leads the wine, varying from 50% to 65+% of the blend. Koonunga Hill has a reputation for medium, occasionally long-term cellaring potential, but has always been crafted for immediate enjoyment upon release.
