What to Expect
Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Holding it's color well after 13 years, still deep red and youthful looking. I was concerned because some of these have turned up corked recently but this bottle seems in good condition.
Nose is restrained for an Aussie Shiraz; pronounced violets and inkiness upon opening. Later, some typical fruit appears, a bit spicy and maybe a little heat.
This in-your-face style Shiraz has definitely mellowed to a graceful wine. Nice acid and not overextracted. Well balanced and integrated. There is a distinct leather-licorice thing going on that I can't quite pin down read more...

The Kalimna vineyard is one of the finest red wine vineyards in Australia and produces a portion of the wine for Grange. Some of the vines here are as old as one hundred and produce intensely flavoured fruit that was the inspiration of Bin 28. Today the Kalimna vineyard continues to play an integral part in Bin 28, although, like most of the Penfolds red wines, this wine is a multi regional blend. Although oak maturation is an integral part of this wine's character, very little of the oak used is new. The result is a wine rich in varietal character and robust in structure.
