A magnificent edifice of a wine, elegant and refined in structure but dripping with flavor - a virtual cascade of plum, black cherry, blackberry, anise, pepper and exotic spices that lingers on the finish; this just doesn't quit. Best after 2002.

The Wine of the Year in 1995 (with the '90 vintage), Australia's legendary red once again graces our Top 100 with its current release. Chief winemaker John Duval relies on Penfold's Kalimna vineyard in Barossa Valley for the backbone of the Grange blend.

As if wine collectors weren't already falling over themselves to get precious bottles of Australia's most fabled wine, along comes a vintage like this. It's an astonishing wine, utterly seamless, maybe the best Grange yet. Powerful, aristocratic and impressive in the way it gathers up its flavors and lets them hang on and on and on while the finish lingers. The range starts with black cherry, blackberry, exotic spice and mineral, and moves on to dark licorice, pepper and subtle gamy notes. Then it all comes together and picks up speed on the finish. Best after 2007.

Though the nose on this wine is still somewhat closed, it's still remarkable. Individual notes (apart from eucalyptus and toast) aren't discernible; instead, it's an intense, penetrating sensation that fills the nose. Vanilla and coffee flavors are sumptuous foils to rich blackberries on the palate, which is muscular and plush as all get-out. Finishes long, with big but soft tannins. We can't wait to revisit it in 10-15 years, when the gems that are locked up tight now will sparkle.

The 1998 Grange will be a legendary example. A blend of 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, it tips the scales at a whopping 14.5% alcohol. The inky/purple color is followed by an extraordinarily intense nose of creme de cassis intermixed with blueberry and floral notes. As the wine sits in the glass, aromas of meat, plums, and cola also emerge. It is a seamless effort with sweet tannin, well-integrated acidity, sensational extract, and layer upon layer of blackberry and cassis fruit that stain the palate and fill the mouth. Its harmony, freshness, and remarkable length (the finish lasts nearly a minute) suggest an all-time classic. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030.

A massive wine, with cascades of potent plum, cherry and blackberry fruit swirling around wafts of black pepper, bay leaf and exotic spice, which last and last on the finish, hinting at smoky, meaty notes. It's all packed in tightly, suggesting this should evolve spectacularly with age. Best after 2005.

This dark purple-colored wine exhibits notes of sweet plum, blackberry, and cassis intermixed with some licorice, chocolate, and espresso. It is a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon that tips the scales at 14+% alcohol. The wine is layered, unctuously textured, full-bodied with tremendous intensity, moderately high tannin, and a 40-second finish. The wine needs a good 4-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. This Grange should ultimately merit a higher score when it is closer to its plateau of drinkability.

Winemaker's Notes:
