Penfolds Grandfather Tawny Port 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

In 1844, Christopher Rawson Penfold planted vines on the slopes of Magill to produce fortified wines. Now the historic bluestone cellars are home to a tradition of fortified winemaking dating back over 150 years. In 1915, an oak cask containing a blend of the finest tawnies the company possessed was set aside for the exclusive use of the Penfold family. This became known as 'the Grandfather' due to the great age of the oldest tawnies in the blend. Penfolds Grandfather Liqueur Tawny, a blend of the finest old tawnies and aged in small oak casks, honors this proud tradition and is Australia's leading example of this . The rich yet delicate fruit character harmonizes perfectly with pronounced aged rancio complexity to produce a truly remarkable aged liqueur tawny. Penfolds Grandfather Tawny Port is a multi-vintage blend, using Shiraz and Mourvèdre grapes. This wine is drinking fabulously now, but has a few more years on it if you want to save it for just the right moment! This wine is ideally suited to cheese and dessert Winemaker, James Godfrey...this wine is a deep amber/mahogany in color with the green gold tinges indicative of great age. The nose is extremely complex and fragrant, possessing an array of nutty, vanillin, aged characters melding seamlessly with hints of raisined fruit, malt and lifted spirit. The palate effortlessly displays the famed attributes of great Liqueur Tawny; luscious, rich and full flavored with mouth-filling viscosity and a slightly dry finish. Intense raisined fruit, walnut and toffee flavors harmonize with subtle vanillin oak and rancio complexity before a remarkably long finish.

Tired of boring old wines from Australia? No? Then you can probably thank Penfolds Wines. Penfolds, founded in 1844 by Mary and Dr. Penfold (Mary gets top billing since she took care of most of the early management and winemaking responsibilities), has completely revolutionized not only its own product lines throughout the years, but also many wines in Australia as a whole. The wine produced by Penfolds was originally prescribed as tonic wines for anaemic patients, with the wine made from Grenache. By 1870, with 60 acres under vine, they were producing many more wines. In the 1920s and 1930s, Penfolds was known for its fortified wine, like many other wineries in the area. 1943 marked the start of a massive expansion for Penfolds Winery, with first the acquisition of Auldana Vineyard and its winery, and then the purchase of Kalimna Vineyard in 1945. By the end of the decade, they owned vineyards in McLaren Vale, Griffith, the Hunter Valley, and Minchinbury. Around the same time, winemaker Max Schubert returned from oversees with a completely new vision for the future of the winery. In the 50s, he started experimenting with the red wine he called Grange, which is a mix of primarily Shiraz and a little Cabernet Sauvignon, and by the 1960s the wine had spread across the Australian wine industry. Not wanting to stop with merely one of the most successful wine projects in the history of Australia, Penfolds Wines started the “White Grange” project in the 1990s, leading to the immensely popular and publicized release of the Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay. Peter Gago became their Chief Winemaker in 2002, and he, along with three winemakers in charge of red wine and one in charge of white, continue the tradition of experimentation and evolution. A hot nose of sugar and cherries. Acidic and tannic attack. Very hot and bitter. Lots of residual sugar on the finish. Not good.

Fully aged but bright tawny; the very complex Xmas cake bouquet has all manner of Asian spices asking to he heard; he palate is very luscious yet magically made elegant by its burnt sugar acidity. James Halliday.

Readers can take their pick but the difference in price might ensure that the Grandfather Tawny Liqueur is the way to go. Amazingly rich and honeyed with hints of figs prunes caramel and toffee it is a gorgeous brilliantly made fortified wine composed of Shiraz and Mourvedre. This brilliant fortified is remarkably light on its feet given its massive richness. Thank good winemaking great natural extract and zesty acidity for keeping this wine fresh in spite of its huge residual sweetness
