Penfolds 128 Shiraz 2002
A distinctly Barossa nose of dark chocolate, blueberry and a hint of liquorice.
Mouthfilling and expansive on the palate, the wine is bigger and richer than
the cues afforded by the nose, and undeniably assertive and defined. A
generously flavoured RWT with dark berried fruits and spice courted by
pronounced ripe tannins, culminating in an impressive lingering finish.
Layered, long and luscious with excellent ageing potential. Drink
2006-2020.

External Reviews for Penfolds 128 Shiraz
Penfolds introduced the RWT mdash; a single-appellation Barossa Valley Shiraz matured in French oak mdash; with the 1997 vintage. This red complements the multiregion Grange bottling, which is matured in American oak. Peter Gago, Penfolds chief winemaker, sourced more than 40 percent of the grapes from Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard. The initials stand for ldquo;Red Winemaking Trial, rdquo; the name given internally to the project, which began in 1995.
This year, the RWT is tightly wound, masculine and stately, but all in all, a walk in the dark. Smells like soil, meat and char/smoke and tastes likewise, with those flavors enveloping black plum fruit on the palate. Juicy but taut on the finish, like therersquo;s some blueberries thrown in for good measure. Drink after 2008.
Penfoldsrsquo; Red Wine Trail takes Grange-level shiraz (50 percent from Kalimna) and ages it in French rather than American oak. Its flavors carry a Barossa signature without going too ripe. In fact, this 2001 tastes like black currants and fresh cherries preserved at the exact moment of peak ripeness. The other way itrsquo;s marked as a Barossa shiraz is the floral character, here equally fresh, cool as dew on violets. The French oak may have helped lock in the vibrant magenta color, and it may emphasize the supple richness fo texture. But the main play is in the fruit, hight-toned, sunny, beautifully grown.
Muted aromas, but it's generous and jazzy in the mouth. Lively, with blackberry, cherry and white pepper flavors remaining zingy through the long, harmonious finish. Hints at white chocolate as the flavors linger. Tannins are firm, but fine. Drink no... Wine Spectator. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2002 Penfolds Shiraz Rwt 750ml
The 2001 Shiraz RWT reveals an attractive dense ruby/purple-tinged color as well as an earthy, plum, cherry, and peppery-scented bouquet, medium to full body, and slightly intrusive acidity. The fruit and weight are such that the acidity is only a minor annoyance as opposed to dominating the winersquo;s character and compressing its texture.

Deep ruby. Ripe, fresh aromas of sweet cherry, blackcurrant and chocolate, accented by gentle, sexy (French) oak spice. Remarkably supple and elegant on the palate, with juicy, vibrant redcurrant and raspberry flavors, supported and enhanced by cinnamon, mace and candied violet. This has weight, structure and depth but itrsquo;s also balanced, precise and suave, finishing on a bright, silky note, with polished, ripe tannins.
