Penalolen Sauvignon Blanc. Clos Quebrada de Macul 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Intense aromas of green herbs, jalapeno, gooseberries and pineapple greet the nose. This has a lot of trapped CO2 so it comes off as a little sparkling at first, which is not at all attractive on a hot day with a well chilled bottle. The fruit here shows nice detail recalling the pineapple and lime from the nose with a touch of mango thrown in as well. Less herbaceous in the mouth than on the nose, the herbal components here are well covered right through the finish where the ad a flourish of complexity to the lingering tart fruit. Nice, fresh, and zesty. 87pts

A little smoky and earthy on the nose with a touch of passion fruit rinds and pithy grapefruit aromas. Small and tart on entry, this quickly reveals a sweet wrapping of orange cream and almost peachy fruit buffering the acidity. This lacks a bit of focus on the palate, but does deliver a fairly rich and creamy mouthful of fruit that finishes with cleansing acids and some astringent grapefruit flavors. 84pts

Extremely smooth with a nice coffee element. Tobacco as well. Two of the major vices are tasted here! Just a solid all around effort.

I'm a fan of the fruit bombs and this is one of them. Very in your face. Loved it.

Love this wine's depth and complexity. It pairs very well with steak, as I have had on a few occasions. Notes of dark fruits, tobacco and mocha make this one of my faves.

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot has a full, earthy, dark berry aroma that transports you to Chile. Wine experts will scoff, but why do I detect more than a hint of Malbec flavor in this wine despite its absence in the blend? Is it the Maipo valley Chilean soil that transfers overlapping flavors to various grape varietals? Wine Spectator gave it 88 points. That seems about right to me. It definitely tastes better as it opens, and decanting for at least half an hour is prudent. This vintage is meant to be paired with savory meats, and sharp cheese. The best taste description would be dark berry, pepper, toasted nut, and tobacco with a balanced finish. Great value for the price. Enjoy!

A complex blend of flavors: cassis, a little underbrush, and a mint-mocha undertone I find intriguing. A nice concentration of fruit and good structure at this price point. Plus it has a freaky looking head on the label. Everyone needs that in their wine rack.

Opaque ruby. Smoky red- and blackcurrant scents are lifted by notes of black pepper and fresh rose. A sappy, appealingly sweet midweight that shows a seamless texture and vibrant dark berry flavors, with a hint of cured meat emerging with air. The smoky note comes back on the finish, which shows a slight hard edge and good persistence.

Richly textured, with layers of herbal tea, licorice, eucalyptus and spicebox intermingling with deep black fruit flavors. Incredible complexity for the price! The 15 months spent in French oak add toasty mocha and subtle spice elements, while the small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blended with the 85% Cabernet Sauvignon give it just the right amount of lift and roundness. Very food-friendly mdash; try pairing with herb-crusted lamb, hearty vegetarian dishes (especially with zucchini) or beef with goat cheese.

Quite minty, but fleshy and balanced, displaying good dark currant and mulled plum fruit backed by a broad, toast- and loam-filled finish. Drink now. 7,000 cases imported. -JM Dark ruby red, spice box, red fruits, good depth and concentration, medium-long finish.

Dark red. Spicy red berries and herbs on the nose. Fresh redcurrant and cherry flavors are light in body and refreshingly tangy, with no obvious tannins. A bitter chocolate note adds edge to the tightly focused finish. Irsquo;d give this a bit more bottle aging, or decant it.
