Peller Estates Riesling Icewine 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Peller Family Icewine is a rare dessert wine produced from the juice of naturally frozen grapes that have been picked in the middle of a cold Canadian winter. At 43 degrees, the Niagara Peninsula is within the same latitudinal range as Southern France, Rioja in Spain, Chianti Classico in Italy and Oregon. The Niagara Peninsula is the only place in the world where every single year the summers are so warm they can grow fine wine grapes, but the winters are cold enough to make Icewine (but never so cold that the vines do not survive.) To make this amazing wine naturally frozen Riesling grapes are hand harvested from Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyards at -10°C. The grapes are pressed frozen, releasing only one drop of pure extract from each grape. The fermentation is performed at a cool temperature to retain fruit concentration then aged in stainless steel. Peller Riesling has a delicate straw yellow colour with an intriguing aroma of lemon drops, quince, Bartlett pear and golden raspberries, with a touch of floral honey. On the palate this Icewine displays a luscious yet elegant mouth-feel with fruit flavours of lemon, melon, papaya, mango and orange. It has a refreshing acidity and a long length. Best enjoyed when served chilled at 8 - 10°C. Peller Riesling Icewine is a wonderful accompaniment to food, complimenting dishes such as paté or with foie gras for a mouth sensation. Also a wonderful companion to salty appetizer or cheese (such as mild blue cheeses) and an absolute must with fruit based desserts!

It all began in 1927, when my grandfather, Andrew Peller, first arrived in Canada from Hungary. Having owned a series of successful businesses, he came here to finally pursue his dream. He envisioned a day when Canadians, like Europeans, would come to appreciate premium-quality wines and enjoy sharing them with family and friends. After exhaustive research, he decided to plant his first vineyards in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley and, soon afterwards, to open a modest winery in that province as well. As the seeds of his dream were firmly taking root out West, he began looking eastward. Many years and countless setbacks later, he and my father, Joe (who was by then very much involved in the family business), finally made a breakthrough. An offer to purchase a winery and winemaking license in Ontario was accepted in the spring of 1969. Read less
