Pellegrini Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley Cloverdale Ranch 2005
2005 was a cool growing season with grapes ripening well into October. The extra time on the vine resulted in intensely flavored, complex fruit. Virtually all the wine was feremented in small open-top ferementors and punched down twice daily during the three-week maceration. After pressing, the wine was racked to a combination of French, Hungarian and American oak where it spent the next 19 months. The 2005 Cloverdale Ranch Cabernet is a beautiful deep red color with purple highlights. The cooler weather in September gave us a wine with classic Cabernet aromatics and structure. Ripe black cherry and current aromas dominate the nose with chocolate, coffee and spice notes adding complexity. The vintage once again put its stamp on the wine. The structure is firm and elegant and promises a graceful evolution in bottle.
A top 100 wine this year by SF Chronicle. I very much enjoyed the wine, it is not too overpowering but provides a nice aroma and mouth feel. We paired this with short ribs and polenta and it was excellent.
This has been one of my favorite wines for a nice BBQ or just sitting and relaxing on the deck with some good cheese and pepperoni.
