Peju Province Winery Merlot Napa Valley 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lovely toasted cedar, coriander, burnt sugar and vanilla accents frame a notably bright core of black fruit that leans toward the cherry/black raspberry end of the spectrum. Smooth and rich, and a little soft perhaps but not much. This is rather extravagant Merlot. It has all the plummy fruit, mocha accents, hints of herbs and spices wrapped into a rich, powerful and luxurious package. there is plenty of structure here. Big tannins peek out on the backend and drive the finish into a dry and toasty finale, but then a pop of fred fruit appears to remind us who is in charge. A serious wine, and one that deserves 2-3 years in the cellar but it’s drinking well already and is a relative bargain. 93pts

The love of farming and a passion for wine brought Tony Peju to the Napa Valley. A series of ideas - starting in his birthplace on the Caspian Sea, then France, England and eventually, Los Angeles -- created the Peju's Napa Valley winery. In 1982, Tony and his wife Herta purchased 30 acres of land in the Napa Valley with the magic ingredient - location. Neighboring vineyards in Rutherford included Robert Mondavi, Inglenook and Beaulieu. Situated between Highway 29 and the Napa River, the acreage included a 1900-era house and rambling vineyards, some 60 or more years old. Looking to the future, Tony and Herta have introduced their two daughters, Lisa and Ariana, to the workings of the wine business. Both of the young women are immersing themselves in all aspects of Peju Winery. Read less

Medium dark ruby color; effusive, ripe berry, berry pie, vanilla nose; tasty, a little tight, sweet berry, blackberry, berry pie palate; medium-plus finish. (83% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, 8% Zinfandel; 16 mos. in French & American oak, 35% new; 14.1% alcohol) 92+ points

Good core of blackberry, black cherry and hints of raspberry and cranberry, some spiciness, well integrated toasty oak and fine, dusty tannins.
