Pedroncelli Syrah Dry Creek Valley Estate Vineyards 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

This is the first mature crop from this vineyard. On September 19, we harvested just over 4 ton of fruit with an average brix of 26 degrees. The ripe fruit allowed the concentrated sugars and color to be highlighted. The lot was destemmed, but only 50% of the load was crushed. Retaining a portion of whole berries aids in preservation of the fruity characteristics in the wine. Wine was inoculated with yeast and fermented in one small-lot tank. Following fermentation in the temperature controlled stainless steel tank, the wine was racked and transferred to barrels. The wine was aged for 17 months in American and Hungarian oak barrels, blending new with seasoned oak to bring the fruit forward.

Since 1927, when John Pedroncelli, Sr. purchased vineyard and a small winery in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley, two elements remain unchanged: the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family's dedication to making fine wines. John Pedroncelli began his winemaking career as a child working side by side with his father, John Sr. learning from the ground up. After World War II and his service in the US Coast Guard, he graduated from Santa Rosa Junior College and then attended many winemaking classes at University of California at Davis. John’s style is Pedroncelli’s style—wines that are flavorful and balanced to reflect the region’s characteristics—he allows the wines to speak for themselves. As a family winery who has farmed for 80 years in the Dry Creek Valley, we want the next generations to be able to continue farming in an environmentally sensitive way. The most important statement we can make about our wine is that we are here for the long term and protecting the environment is one way we will achieve that goal. At Pedroncelli Winery, we practice sustainable winegrowing and, over the years, we have been reducing water use, building healthy soil, and protecting the vineyard environment. This is a comprehensive approach to vineyard management that involves all aspects of farming including human resources, viticulture, soil management, water management, pest management, habitat management, and wine quality. Tasting Notes:

Deep inky indigo in the glass. Decadent aromas of crushed raspberries and bramble spice. Flavors are rich and juicy with boysenberry, cassis and chocolate overtones. Concentrated flavors highlight this Syrah along with a great grip on the palate. Expect this wine to take on complexities for the next 5-7 years. It will age well into 2012.
