Pedroncelli Petite Sirah Dry Creek Valley 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Inky, brooding and savory aromas of concentrated blackberry, black currant preserves and rich butter-rum spiked chocolate mousse. In the mouth this sings with ripe fruit flavors of black cherry and black currant, turning earthy and oaken towards the mid palate, and sloping down towards an earthy finish of toast, butter and oak. 90 pts

Since 1927, when John Pedroncelli, Sr. purchased vineyard and a small winery in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley, two elements remain unchanged: the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family's dedication to making fine wines. John Pedroncelli began his winemaking career as a child working side by side with his father, John Sr. learning from the ground up. After World War II and his service in the US Coast Guard, he graduated from Santa Rosa Junior College and then attended many winemaking classes at University of California at Davis. John’s style is Pedroncelli’s style—wines that are flavorful and balanced to reflect the region’s characteristics—he allows the wines to speak for themselves. As a family winery who has farmed for 80 years in the Dry Creek Valley, we want the next generations to be able to continue farming in an environmentally sensitive way. The most important statement we can make about our wine is that we are here for the long term and protecting the environment is one way we will achieve that goal. At Pedroncelli Winery, we practice sustainable winegrowing and, over the years, we have been reducing water use, building healthy soil, and protecting the vineyard environment. This is a comprehensive approach to vineyard management that involves all aspects of farming including human resources, viticulture, soil management, water management, pest management, habitat management, and wine quality. Tasting Room Our tasting room is open 10am to 4:30pm daily, except major holidays. Read less

I've had similar bottles at twice the price. This is a prototypical petite sirah with some acid and bite. The cabernet franc really shines in the nose as all I smell are Jalapeno Corn Nuts.

Real funky, dirty barnyard nose. Sweet fruits (plums, cherry) evolve into a bitter, tannic finish. I found the wine to be a bit disjointed for my taste.

Funky Barnyard notes over Dark Fruits in the nose, this Petite is also a big burly example with oaky pencil lead -- emphasis on the lead -- obscuring the fruit beneath, finishing very pithy.
